The main culprits appear to be Reflections, Water Reflections and Shadows (in-game Video options) for me so I switched them off. Unfortunately you miss out on some awesome graphics like the fully shiny corrugated iron roofs, but the games still looks beautiful (you can still max everything else) and will run so fast - a much better playing experience overall. For some reason those 3 extra bells and whistles manage to bring my P4 2.4 and 9800 Pro to a crawl in places.
