View Full Version : Indy 4 - light on the CGI - heavy on the action

"If you've watched the Indiana Jones films recently, you may have noted, with a certain amount of nostalgic relish, how real it all feels. That's not to say you truly believe Harrison Ford is facing off against a king cobra (the reflection in the glass separating them is something of a giveaway) but the fact remains that it's a real snake and not some CG jiggery-pokery. Speaking to Indiana Jones 4 producer Frank Marshall, Empire Online enquired whether the fourth instalment will retain its forbears' penchant for good old-fashioned stunt work or embrace the technological revolution.

"One of the things I enjoy about these movies is that they do recall the old cliffhanger serials of the thirties and forties," said Marshall. "We didn't have computer effects in those days, we couldn’t easily erase things and I think one of the unfortunate by-products of the computer age is that it makes filmmakers lazy. You become more creative when you have to hide ramps with a tree rather than erase it later as you can today.

"In Raiders, that's a real ball rolling behind him so Harrison really is in some danger running in front of that; these are real situations and that adds to the excitement and the creative energy on the set."

All well and good but will the fourth instalment, like Die Another Day before it, sell out on traditional action and opt for ropey CG instead? "We're not done with the script on Indy 4 but I think we're going to try and rely, like the first two movies, on realism and not try to do too many things with the computer." Yes, yes, something we've heard many times before but Marshall seems quite earnest on maintaining the purity of the franchise. "When you start getting into computers you get fantastical situations like in the Matrix or movies like that. We don't want that, we want exciting heroism, we want seat-of-your-pants, skin-of-your-teeth action. We didn't have all the money in the world on the first films and we want to keep that B-Movie feel. We want to make Indy 4 like we made the first three."

Thats good news. I really do hate todays film makers reliance on CGI.

I think they will have to utilise a lot of wire work just to keep the bugger upright at this rate....

Personally I was trying to be as optomistic about that as possible right up to the point whereI saw an interview with him on breakfast news last week.
Time and tide, and the aging process wait for no man.
Still keeping my fingers crossed though.

Meanwhile.... one month to release of Indy DVD boxset.

If you have a multi-region player, I would seriously go for the Region 1 set.
The UK region 2 set contains the heavily trimmed 'Temple of Doom' version..... even after all these years.
The US set is un-cut.

They're still cutting it for the UK?

Cheers for the heads-up, region 1 it is then. http://forums.eidosgames.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

My Indy box set arrived this last week.
The picture and sound are indeed amazing, but the extras are a bit run of the mill, and not especially enlightening.
Nice to have, but it could have been soooo much more special after all this time.

From the extras list, they look like the docu's I've already got on the special accompanying videos from when they released the video boxset way, way back when.

My R2 set came today, and yes the picture and sound quality is beautiful, but I have only watched Raiders so far so I don't know if the R2 set is cut. No matter if it is. I am just so pleased that I can watch Raiders in such stunning clarity. And along with the recent release of Once Upon A Time In The West, I won't even be moaning about Starwars for a while. :)

Having just spent too much moola on vids just for the Hallween party
I'm gonna have to hold out for this one now. But I have get them eventually.
All we have is a very old tape of Lost Ark.

Can't say for sure myself as I only have the R1 set.... but the news about the Temple-lite version was on the BBC's website previewing the set a month or so ago.

I don't know if Indy 4 is such a good idea after seeing Harrison Ford interviewed in the extras. Made me realise I haven't watched a new film of his in a long while - he looks knackered.

Perhaps that will be the extent of computer generated enhancements to make Harrison look younger.
