After initially playing the game with my Athlon 1700+ I decided it was time to upgrade the processor, so i got an Athlon 2400+ Thoroughbred, and now TR Angel of Darkness will not run. After clicking the Settings button on the Launcher theres a brief pause and then a crash dialog prompt is displayed complaining about TRAOD_P3.exe.

My System is:

Windows XP Home
1GB DDR Ram
SB Audigy 2
GeForce 4 Ti4400 128Mb

Can anyone help?

The TRAOD_P3.exe file is for use with an Intel Pentium 3 processor with SSE instructions. An AMD Athlon processor probably should have nothing to do with that file.

Having changed your processor, you may need to reinstall the game to have the installation routine set things up properly for your new AMD Athlon 2400+ processor.

Thats what I thought, I uninstalled and reinstalled and it still didn't work. I also tried the dxdiag audio acceleration tip but that didn't help either.

I noticed the bin folder in the TROAD game folder has three exe's:

TROAD.exe
TROAD_P3.exe
TROAD_P4.exe

I've tried using them all, the P3 and P4 exes crash almost instantly, the TROAD.exe has a window that says Enumerating Audio Devices, and then it crashes displaying:

Generic Game Error

ASSERTION: 'pData && length>0' at C:\projects\tomb raider\Game\ai\script_mgr.c(400)

hey,

that is exactly the same what happens when I try to start the game under Windows XP. See my thread about traod crashing. When I try to start up under W98SE it immediately crashes as well. I ran the game on another machine so it is not a problem with a damaged disk. I just don't understand what is wrong but apparently it is something basic.

On the Settings General tab, Intel SSE and Intel SSE2 should not be checked with an AMD Athlon processor, and AMD 3DNow! should be checked. These settings should have been made correctly by the installation of the program.

That makes sense, but it crashes before the configuration program loads so I can't alter any settings.

You get the launcher panel, but it crashes when you click Settings. Is that right? I don't know what to suggest.

You say it worked with the AMD Athlon 1700+. You might try putting that processor back in.

What is the difference between the Athlon 1700+ and the Athlon 2400+?

Thats correct.

The difference between the 1700 and the 2400 is the core, the 2400 has a 0.13 micron core and is a thoroughbred AMD, the 1700 was an original AthlonXP.

hey,

i just solved my problem. Now what is the case on my PC is that I am running multiple systems, i.e. W98SE, Windows XP Pro and Linux.
I installed the game with W98SE and did all the things I described in my thread. Nope. Then I tried to play it from Windows XP just by clicking TRAOD.exe in the folder it was installed. Nope, got the same error you describe. Logical because the game was installed under W98SE. So I uninstalled it there, reinstalled it from within XP, installed all the appropriate drivers and tried again. First unchecked the 'multitreaded and SSE option' in the settings and started up. It's walking like a banana....................
Now you say you only changed the procesor. Is that really the case?? Did anything change in the BIOS settings, multiple systems suchs as I have etc??? Be sure to have the latest drivers and directx 9.0 or reinstall them. In my case I have not used the patch. Whatfor is it anyway???

Greetingz :D

Interesting, I do run SuSe Linux 8.2 Pro as well as Windows XP Home on the same machine. I don't remember changing any bios settings other than for the processor itself, i'll have to see if anything has altered in the bios this evening. I'll post a message once i've had a play.

Thanks for the help.

Tried adjusting various bios settings but it didn't help. TROAD still crashes before loading the settings program :(

hey,

when I had trouble with starting the game up it would, in some occasions, crash when starting the launcher or the settings. It is important to do following:

check with msconfig what programs are started up in the background and put out as much as possible.
check whether your video card software starts up properly. In some occasions, I don't know why, it didn't on my PC.
OK, install and run it under XP and be sure that all drivers are installed or reinstalled as wel.
when you succeed in starting up the settings, this can take a few minutes!!!!, adjust the multithread/sse options, close the settings, the launcher and start up again. Check whether the changes you made are saved. Then try start the game.

Success! I fixed it. Thanks everyone for your help, here's what fixed the problem.

The registry, obviously the uninstall program is not removing registry keys properly, i ran a search through regedit for 'angel' and deleted the first main registry section for Core Software. Retried the launcher and it worked.

TRLR often needs to have registries removed before it can be reinstalled successfully, also. Some kind of faukt in the uninstall wiz, I suppose.
