what button is for attack and also is there a button for the items you pick up..

I figured out that tab is the inventory just having troubles with the attack method the book says action 1,2, 3 times but this does not work anyone else have this problem.

i was trying it on the dog on the traing level and was not able to get it to work. it did work on the guy on the top of the level after you get the key.
