As a fan of the comic since day one, I've been eagerly awaiting this film since its inception.
The film was late in coming. It should have been a May release, but due to the horrendous flooding in Prague last year, where it was shot, production was delayed. They lost many of the sets and everything had to be rebuilt.
The wait was worth it.
Action packed from beginning to end.
There were no dull moments.
The humor is impeccible and I was so glad they kept the dialogue (and humor)
to the era in which the story takes place.
(I hate when movies try to incorporate modern day dialogue into period pieces.)
Everybody played their characters to perfection.
Alan Moore has expanded on the lives of these illustrious literary characters (in the comics)
and none of that is lost in the movie.
Although the film is based on the first LXG series (it is in it's second storyline, now),
it is a totally new story. The only elements retained from the first storyline are the introduction of the characters and the pulling together of the team itself.
I'm quite glad it is a new story because it gives me more LXG to enjoy.
The characters (in the comics as well as the movies) are truer to their literary roots rather than any filmed version you've seen before. Another Bravo for that.
On the other side of that same coin, the characters are just as true to their version in the comics for the most part. (edit-some changes were made either to spice up a particular character or to make them a tad more palatable to the general public, or for what I'm assuming may be certain copyright issues.)
There were little things in the movie that I spotted that started to lead my mind in speculation about what was to come, and then the curves were thrown.
There are more than one or two totally unexpected plot twists. Another reason I loved this film.
They even found a way to get some of Kevin O'Neill's extremely unique art style into this film, even though it is a live action film. (And I'm not talking about his work appearing on a poster or something. I'll explain what I'm talking about here after more people have seen the film.)
And just wait until you see the Nautilus!:D
(edit 2 - I have, since posting this, read a few other reviews from fans of the comic
who didn't like it, but I'm thinking that they are just being really nit-picky fanboys. Comments along the lines of when fans were miffed when they made Rougue and Iceman too young in the X-men movies or casting Sir Ian as Magneto or not having the exact costume, etc.)
