got the eax enabled ......and now i have the problem of trying to run the game the enumerating audio device stalls :( any ideas on why and how to fix it

Try to disable EAX and make sure your soundcard supports it.
But then again... if you can't enter the game because it stalls there, probably you won't be able to enter the Settings, because it also enumerates audio devices...
