View Full Version : Confusing reviews...

C & VG (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/front_index.php?) have a review out of AOD.
It's a bit of a hatchet job, and whilst they say 'maybe it'll grow on you', or words to that effect, their basic angle on it is:
Even confirmed Raider fans are likely to find fault with Lara's latest exploits.
But the faults they find aren't the ones I've been reading about in these forums. Their first point of praise is this:
On the positive side, Core's technology allows for a silky smooth experience, with a solid framerate the majority of titles in the genre have failed to achieve.
But it's laggy framerate that I've read most complaints about on this forum!
As I'm in the UK, I don't get to find out for myself till Friday (maybe). Till then, my question is: what's going on, peeps? Do you think that people just have it in for TR and want to find fault with AOD?

the game runs at 60 fps ...that's awesome, but it has slowdowns, i guessed the focused on the positive aspect and didn't review the game based on its flaws like so many are doing...if they did that to every game not even the great splinter cell would have made it...because guess what it has flaws...

ive played quiet a few games with slow downs like the ones in aod.
still its a minor thing to me, its just the ps2 cant cope really (wont happen in the pc version) .
the game is pretty good once id sussed the controls.

The slowdowns were far worse in BO2.
What were the complaints they said?

- That it was slow-paced (which is fine for my tastes)
- That it was old-fashioned
- That it was - hey! - a Tomb Raider game (what did they expect?)
- That the graphics were dated (eg, enemies disappearing)
Follow the link in my original post for more. I get the feeling people have got it in for TR, and that there's a 'backlash' in progress...

there's been a backlash against tr for a while now, led mostly by the l337 'run'n'gun' hard-core (whatever that is) community. i've always assumed it's based on a combination of 1) having to play as a non-sleazy woman & 2) not being patient / bright enough to figure out the puzzles...
(not to mention, of course, all those frustrated duke nukem fans who're still bitter (they are!) about the fact that lara continues to live on, & he doesn't (rip) )...

being bright has nothing to do with it. switch hunting doesn't require a whole lot of brains only an incredible amount of patience. but i still like TR even if the great amount of "puzzles" are just switch hunting.

duke isn't dead. he's been coming out with a new game for the last 6 years or something like that. he's merely crouching waiting to pounce...much like a shaven cat hunting a bird. they are taking their time with the game though. and what the hell is BO2? i can't seem to remember any title with BO.

oh yeah, if you want a game that requires real brains to beat then try Omikron: the nomad soul. that ones a killer.

All reviewers seem to hate games that take long to be made. They gather that after so many years in production and so many delays, it should be perfect. The fact that they say that "it's a Tomb Raider game" means that after all the publicity saying that this would be something new and special they were dissaponted to find out that it's not that new noe special! (Although that's god enough for me) And every reviewer that respects himself (lol) has to bury every game that comes out with a certain amount of hype surrounding it!!
