View Full Version : "Check message length" for post - so how long can posts be?

When sending private messages, 1000 characters is the maximum length. Being as verbose as I am, that means I typically have to edit the message to get it down under that maximum.

When posting a new message to a thread, I noticed there is also a "Check message length" link at the bottom of the input area for the post's body. It tells me how many characters are in my post. Okay, but is there a maximum limit to how many characters can be in a post?

If there is a maximum, it will tell you when you click the "Check Message Length" link. TTLG has a 15,000 character limit per post.

Currently, in the interests of brevity, we have it set to a 1500 character limit.

1500??? GM, are you referring to PMs or posts? Vanguard asked what is the limit to a real forum post. I hope that is not 1500 characters. That would be way too small. I know we have made quite a few posts much longer than that. 10,000 characters, maybe 120 lines, would be more like it for things like ghost reports. DJC is on the right track.

Oh, it's much larger than 1500 characters. Just take a look at one of the "archive" threads, far more than 1500 characters in there.

I agree, the limit probably is larger than 1500. However, archives don't count. What counts is present policy, which we still don't know.:)

Well, I know the forum post maximum message length has to be over 3300 characters since one of the ghost reports in the part3 ghost FM thread is that long - and I can far more verbose than that.

My post in the tid-bits thread is 54634 characters long without spaces and 57992 with spaces(courtesy of Microsoft Word). I think this was before the limits were added though. Either that or the limit is somewhere around 60,000.

Speaking of archives, I was lurking at the vBulliten site forums(either vbulliten.com or vbulliten.org, I was at both) and they're adding in archiving threads in the next version(which is a good thing!).

Doh!

My error...there is currently no limit to posting size, and the limit to PM is 1500 characters.
