View Full Version : New units?

I was thinking that if Pyro/Eidos made a addon for Praetorians of some new units they could have for the three existing sides- barbarians, Romans and Egyptians.

For Romans I could think of:

Velites-light skirmishers that throw spears-pack more punch than normal arrows (but then I didnt know if Velites or units to that effect were being used by Roman generals at this time in the game)

Standard bearer: holds the Eagle up, acts like a centurion, all units within a certain range recieve a +5% attack bonus +5% bonus but the bearer should only have a few hit points.

For Barbarians I came up with:

Slingers!!! barbarians did have slingers in the Iron Age, espeically in Britain were they use to have Hill Forts.

And War Chariots! they should pack more punch than the Egpyitans ones and have Scythed weels and a special attack abit like the Germanic calvary impale charge, except it kills two people on either side of the chariot. (THink Boudiciea)

For Egyptians I came up with:

Chariot Archers! they should have one driver and 2 archers on the chariot itself, there should be less archer chariots than there are mounted archers, but they should be able to fire whilst the chariot is moving without draining stamina.

Couldnt think of a second Egyptian unit

What do you lot think about those ideas? (hypothertically) if they release a addon, id like to see not only at least 1 new faction but also new units to add more strategy to the existing sides.

I like your ideas.
Especially, the "standard-bearer," for the Romans.
The chariots would be awesome too.

They should have upgrades like upgraded weapons, armor, and agility.

I have a book on rome and it has some pictures of weapons used, the one that I think would make a nice additon was a catapult pulled by horses, would be much faster then the regular capatapult. I was thinking you could just have infantry build them but it would cost a honour point, or that somehow get two horses from your calvary to pull it and it wouldn't cost any hounor points. Btw anyone else catch that the catapults arn't historicall accurate? Very little catapult were ever the "spoon" or "fork" desighn seen in pratorians and movies. It was more of a sling; a pouch kinda, it would go alot farther. Anyways the standard-bearer idea is good idea.
If only we had the tools to do it ourselves I could, I have some expierance in modding games.

I had an idea for Egyption and Barbarian units, both have ancient art depicting the use of giant dogs (mastiffs for the Gauls) in battle. How about and egyption unit that would be battle dog handlers that would bring dogs into battle release them to attack weak infantry and archer units. The handlers themselves could even draw swords and attack.

not bad xtend13, war dogs never really knew armies employed them!
and Pauldis I wouldnt mind seeing a horse draw catapult but it should still be preety slow, like say the speed of a legion marching?

I wouldn't mind seeing naval units; Roman galleys, etc.
Naval warfare would be so cool, in this game.

I at least think there should be an option to have more than 500 units on battle, and in a teamg ame, if your partner leaves your still stuck with 500 troop limit

Thats about the speed I was thinking, the catapults pulled are slower the the roman medic which is slow alright :)

Instead of Standard bearers, why not allow a set amount of standards on a battlefield, that units could pick up and carry into battle, these would give set bonuses, but these would be lost if the troops carrying it died. Make them usuable by any race?

There could be diffrent "morale bosters" (there is no morale but things that make you fight better) I'm not sure what barbarians used, maybe a horn blower or something, something similer for egypt.

Roman:
Imperial Guard (Like Praetorians Exept Swordmen With Swaped Attack/Defence Values).
Velites (Light Javlin Throwing Infantry).
Contarii (Heavy Cav).
Cross Bow (Slow Fire But Very Powerful).

Barbarian:
Celtic Javliniers.
Celtic Slingers.
Celtic Chariots (War Chariots).

Egyptian:
Charoit Archers.
Scyth Chariots.
Macedonian Phalanx (Heavy Spearman Infantry).

And As For Two New Factions/Civs I Think They Should Add:
Parthia:
Parthian Cav.
Immortals (Acually Persian But Used By Parthians, Like Praetorians).
Macemen.
Swordsmen.
Median Bowmen.
Metsopotamian Slingers.

Greece (United):
Peloponesian Slingers.
Thessalian Cavalry.
Peltasts (Greek Javlinmen).
Toxophilites (Greek Arches/Bowmen).
Hoplites (Like Auxilllary Infantry).
Spartan Hoplites (Like Spearmen).
Royal Guards(Like Imperial Guard).
Greek Phalanx.
Agema Phalangites (like Praetorians).

Egyptians Did Adopt The Phalanx After The Conquests of Alexander, The Ptolemeys Used it Against The Barbarians (Nabatian Arabs + Jews) Selukos and Antiochas and Lybians.

I'd like to see troops gain a "bonus" through combat: experience, strength, stamina.
Only the Centurians gaining, doesn't seem right somehow.

Like, Units Become "Veterans" And Are Better And Well Seasoned.
Just All Round Improvment (Eg: Valour, Morale), Plus The Standard Valued Should Increase, An Incentive Not To Just (Throw Away) Men.
