View Full Version : As the LoK geeks stick out their collective tongues at the Tomb Raider dorks

*gasp* a quasi-legitimate thread coming out of willow!? Unheard of....

anyhoo...

The Legacy of Kain franchise has been dangerously close to booting Tomb Raider out of the "flagship series" position at Eidos for years.

With both franchises coming out with new games I can't help but ponder what the future brings... well.. the TR crowd has a new Lara game that seems vaguely interesting... i.e. same old crap but just enough changed to possibly make it worth playing again... as where us LoK nerds are looking at a potential landmark title... if what they say is true, Defiance will be huge.... most likely huge enough to warrant it becoming the new Eidos flagship series... what does this mean? Well for starters much more media exposure. Tomb Raider has films, comics, lots of crappy merch etc... now we have lots of crappy merch to look forward to. I don't think they'd ever go for the whole film thing, as the story is really well... too big. Too much crap to cover... but they may do a direct to video GG or animated miniseries or some such thing... am I expecting such things? No, but it is plausible (a major motion picture is more realistic though, as it’s easier to market and has a much larger profit margin… although it does cost far more to make… but typically companies take the risk… which is unfortunate, as it’s almost never done properly… well… unless magic happens and Hennig is allowed to produce or something along those lines).

But I do know one thing... a landmark game makes money... which leads to a much larger advertising budget... which leads to much higher sales... which leads to much more backing by Eidos... which leads to far more media exposure... which means much more crap for me to play with... and I really like crap to play with.

lets just hope CD can beat Eidos off with a stick if they try and make them crap out a game every year (I know Eidos has been better about it in recent history... but I can't help but think that old habits die hard)..

Willow, I've hung out with your ass how many times now? You're about as spooky as a week-old kitten that's been soaked in milk. But, at the very least, you do seem to have the "goth" thing down pretty well.

As for me, I'm just your everyday middle-class white boy that tries to be a punk - and fails miserably every time.

But as for the game... Fah. I give up on being sick of hearing about it. Screw being the jerk of the forums all the time - I'm excited as hell about the thing! I just hope we don't see a huge innundation of "what I think would be cool" threads... As I'll have a hard time keeping my angst out of them.

personaly i always found the tombraider games a little borning well the two i played that is.
and think of them as somthing to play if i cant get to sleep on a night:p
it would be good to see Raz and Kain give Lara a good kicking.

(mmmm thinks mabee that could make it into a bonus section on the disk:D )

I think it would be good to see it become Edos flagship and geting advertising deals like Lucozade imagen how that would go

Raziel:- Whenever i get tired or my wrath blade get weary i drink Lucozade.

or Nike

Kain:- Just do it Raziel.

Of course Janos could do Red Bull with Raziel :D

we that's my opinion anyway.

Well, I must admit, I do like the Tomb Raider series of games. All the rest such as films, comics etc are just pure crap.

As for the Nosgothic series, all I have seen, I have liked and I really do mean all of it. It's taken my breath away.

Tomb Raider, you have failed me.

And so on this note, I wave my butt at you.

Raziel Rocks!!!!

LOK will never be as big as tomb raider. lara has a little (yeah right) thing or 2 on her chest that neither raziel or kain posess.
She is also about the most well known video game character EVER. Even my mum knows who she is.

no matter how good the LOK series becomes it will never appeal to EVERYONE because it's essentially a vampire game with 4 games of previous story. While this game will more than likely steal every DMC and Res evil fan etc around the world the tomb raider fans won't budge.

I think this game will easily become the best game ever if it does half the things we're promised...............must.......have............defiance..........now!

oh yeah. tomb raider looks pretty good too. the delays are going to make it's sales suffer the way SR1s did tho. Im' still gonna buy it but I'm not expecting it to be what the first one was to me (I got it with my PSX back in the day and instantly fell in love with it (seeing all I had was a megadrive/genesis before hand)

Riovanes

It's odd to hear the PS1 referred to as "back in the day." I got mine about two years after they came out, but that was only because I bought an N64 first because I was still a major Nintendo fanboy at the time (and that was a mistake - other than Ocarina of Time, that system was a waste of money.).

For me, "back in the day" is my little NES - my grandparents sent me one while I was living in Germany - and that was the same month they came out. Needless to say, I love my grandparents to death.;) It was probably a little more than twelve years ago that I sold my NES at a garage sale (I'd just gotten a Super Nintendo, and was too cool a kid to keep that old NES around), and that was the biggest mistake EVER. So I recently tracked down the individual parts for an NES, and built my own from the ground up - all I had to have on prefab was the case. Let me tell you, it works perfectly! No flashing blue screen for me!

But, just to make this a little less OT - Lara is only popular, in my estimation, because when people my age were thirteen, maybe fourteen (game was out in 95 or 96, wasn't it?), we didn't have any buxom female heroines to ogle. Now, lonely little geeks the world over can drool about Lara all they want, and they don't even have to be careful about where they look. Lame, yes - but was this done to the game intentionally? Probably. Someone knew exactly what they were doing with the adolesecent - 25 target market. LoK, on the other hand, while it has had its share of hangups (*coughPS2versionofBO2cough*), is predominately story driven, and is extremely dark in places... As fneh said, this doesn't appeal to everyone - the average person today only has the stomach for simple, surface-level plot, and they want it covered over with liberal amounts of gore and TnA, which is why, sadly, many great games and movies (Boondock Saints, for instance) never catch on - the public just doesn't have the attention span for it.

In any case, Defiance is gonna r0x0r. To be a total geek about it, Defiance, as they say, has "teh L33+."

BAH!!!

TR although majorly lacking in story and game play(at least for me) has two thing going for it that LoK just doesn't.

1) It has been a bigger name for a longer period of time.

2) It has a girl with a huge rack as its main character.

I was never a fan of that series because when it comes to games, the game play is everything. If I want to see a good looking girl I will watch TV or a movie. Now if you realy want to see a good game with a female leed character wait till PARASITE EVE 3 come out as Squaresoft and Enix's first joint verture.

Besides Aya Brea looks better than Laura Croft any day.

Wasn't Lara's boobs supposed to be a programming mistake? How the programmer was all stressed and at a deadline and he added an extra "0" or something to his programming language giving Lara her own cupsize instead of the 'B' that she was supposed to be.

I could be wrong, I thought this was common knowledge anyway.

heh I couldn't get into them at all. Mostly that by the time I took notice of the series they were hyped up to high heaven anyway.

Besides, I played the demo for the 2nd Tomb Raider and kept cracking up every two seconds. The image of Lara in a concrete support bra to stop her boobs from swinging around (like they do in them hentai flicks) kept popping into my brain for some odd reason or another.

I'm afraid your argument has holes in it.

First- to say that said game wouldn't be as popular as another do to the sole fact that the protagonist is a vampire instead of an anatomically incorrect female is ridiculous. For every blithering idiot who plays Tomb Raider solely for the fact that Lara has extraordinarily large breasts there are a handful of people out there with taste that prefer a more cerebral outing. Also, Lara Croft is not the most well known videogame character... If you want to be fair the most successful game character ever created was Sonic the Hedgehog. I'll grant you his games didn't sell as well as the Mario’s and such, but he is the most recognizable character in videogame history. Sonic has appeared on more covers and has had more articles written about him than any other videogame character created to date. Your mother most likely knows about Lara Croft because of the recent film and/or you.

I don't ever recall saying that LoK would appeal to everyone. And it's entirely possible for LoK to bump Lara off her rusted throne. There isn't a game to date that will appeal to everyone. Take Tomb Raider for instance... DOESN'T APPEAL TO THE WILLOW... it takes more than a pair of stupid looking breasts to make me purchase a game... I actually have to enjoy myself while playing.

Your argument: "While this game will more than likely steal every DMC and Res evil fan etc around the world the tomb raider fans won't budge."

Do you realize that the Resident Evil franchise makes more money than the Tomb Raider franchise? Also consider that although Tomb Raider used to be a huge seller, Eidos hurt the franchise by releasing numerous lackluster titles. The last 3 Tomb Raider games sold horribly. We don't need the Tomb Raider fans to budge... there's not as much of them anymore.

Also, I don't believe that the continual delays in the new Tomb Raider will hurt sales that much. The only time in which this would be plausible is if it's delayed so much that is basically looks dated by its release because too much time was spent on development or if it misses out on a holiday season... neither of which are a problem for Core at the moment. TR:AoD will have a huge marketing campaign; and to be fair... MARKETING is was pushes units. That is the only reason why the last 3 or 4 TR games did as well as they did... which wasn't very good to begin with; if it weren’t for marketing they wouldn't have sold at all.
I mean have you played the later ones?... they're abysmal.

Lara Croft can only raid so many tombs... but Kain is eternal... how many adventures can he have with it still being plausible: infinite.

And besides... Lara is a one-dimensional character. She has no personality... She was created in a time when people didn't need story to move the game... as time progresses we've slowly become more dependant upon good storytelling along with excellent gameplay.

The bottom line is, LoK can bump Lara from her throne if Defiance is a blockbuster. The series has been close to it for years; saying that it's not possible isn't the most sound of arguments... especially with what you were trying to back it up with.

Like other people have said, I think the main reason why Tomb Raider is still going strong is name recognition. Lara Croft is more well known than Raziel. That's all there is to it, IMO. :)

Umah Bloodomen
05-07-2003, 07:49 PM
Realistically, there is more room for Lara Croft to keep raiding tombs because her story wasn't actually centralized around any specific thing and is always left open for some new artifact or whatever. (Don't get me wrong, it gets old very quickly as I am sure the sales and hype around TR has shown, as have TR's recent rise in competitive series'.). LOK has been built around the concept that Nosgoth is corrupted and needs to be restored and once that's done, where do you go with the series? I mean in a forward sense, not in a chronicles-type aspect or into the stories of less-predominant characters. I am talking about with Kain. I seriously don't think you can accomplish much with him without altering his personality as a character and I don't forsee that to be something I'd enjoy.

There's only so much that can be done with any given series. I still enjoy the RE games, but the zombie-virus is how old now?

Exactly.

I quite like the Tomb Raider series. I have only played the fourth game (I'm still stuck on a level were you have to use a bull to push buttons - kills me everytime) but I have watched all of the first three.

I agree that TR may have come down a notch in popularity, but it doesn't negate the fact that as long as our favorite female (well, mostly favorite) is in the action and the school kids can still access the 'Lara nude' cheat - I don't think it's going to crash and burn just yet.

Well a lot of our storylines have been adapted from many religious sects, and I truly hope you're not implying that religion is fiction. (That's a bit more chutzpah than I have ;) ).

You know, perhaps if Kain finally bowed down and had those breast implants and jumped to a Triple E, we'd get the respect we want. LOL.

Doctor, call the nice men in the white coats please!

Really people, why are you two sides competing who is the greatest game character? Both characters have their set of disadvantages and advantages, both are suited in their own environment and circumstances. Most importantly, they were created for people to have FUN (okay and for money too)

I can't believe there's a competition with who is more obsessed here. Isn't that usually a bad thing? There is a teeny thing called "having a life" out there :P (ironic words coming from me)

We're just trying to have a fun discussion here.

If you feel threatened in any way.....please don't.

There's nothing wrong with having a little debate between people who share the same passion.... favorite video game.

*raise eyebrow* I'm not threatened in any way. Why should I? Each fan to their own game... I'm not going to tell anyone which game character they should worship cause s/he's the coolest in my opinion ;)
but lol, sounded more like bashing than debate before. My apologies :)

And yet both sides have always have lots of fun (together, I might add) at my Halloween parties.

Just curious - when you look at the list of forums here,
why is Timesplitters listed above LOK?
(I won't mention the top listed game.)

Administration bias. :p

Besides, the Grey one has told me of the games he likes and I didn't remember a mention of TR in between Thief and Soul Reaver

:D

On a side note, I think my little reconissance mission paid off.

May be. But everybody knows the Grey one's real passion is yarn ball.
I liked the Umah/Lara piccy btw. Nicely done.
It's making me wax nostalgic from the old Cuttys vs Raiders days.
Is ther a Mac version of any of the LOK games?
I haven't really looked, but I've been a vamp fan since before the days of Pong, so maybe I ought give LOK a shot.
(since the Sixties, actually when I saw Dracula for the first time. I even saw the House of Dark Shadows movie when it was first in the theaters)
(not that I ever dismissed it out of hand - I'm just not a huge gamer in general)

If Tomb Raider is so great, how come it let me down? :(

The LoK series never let me down, but TR did.

Of course us girls all see through Lara. We know they're fake.

Kain696

I never got into the tomb raider games cause I like games with an actual story line like the LoK games and they will rule TR, even the very weak kain from BO1 can beat Croft

Ah yes, good ol' Yarn ball. What was I thinking? ;)

As far as Mac versions of the LOK series, you're a bit out of luck on that. (And I don't think they'll ever be ported to that OS to be honest).

And because I know you do a lot of graphic artwork, I'll refrain from busting your chops on even mentioning the Mac around here. (Can you tell I am not a Mac fan?). :p Although, I will admit the G4's are nice.

Overall, it's got a heck of a storyline. (More than just vampire lore) and very cool action. I think you'd actually enjoy it.

God, I was wanting to post this at the other thread, and it wouldn't work on my page, so I had to put it on another stupid AOL screenname, and by then it was closed...

But this punctuates my thoughts exactly.

Tomb Raider Franchise: Lotsa $$$
Legacy of Kain Franchise: Lotsa $$$ too.
Tomb Raider Movie(s): Major Cash Cow (still lotsa $$$)
LoK Action Figures: Nifty. $$$.
'War' between LoK and TR players: Nifty too. (No money.)
Apocrypha Roxy unleashing the secret weapon: priceless. :D :p

Go here to see what I mean...

yep yep read and giggle at my mediocre photoshop skillz like whoa (http://hometown.aol.com/jrippa5193/Random.html)

Good one, Roxy.

My mother know's about LC, and she agrees with me that TR is a Playboy game when it come's to who the main character is. I mean, seriously, how can anyone see themself playing any of the TR games (excluding TR1, since she looked normal at least) when the character your handling has two hindunburg's that are likely to make her mess up in one of her flip's eventually...?

Not only that, but won't those give her back aches?

EDIT: Is this 'war' over? If so, then ignore this post completely.

CyCro
05-30-2003, 05:14 AM

KoolKat

Hey, Disco fever, it's only a little fun. Let's not let what happened to the other thread happen here (yes, I know it was me and for the last time I am sorry, but he did attack me first).

Anyway, we're not really dissing TR. It's just poking a little fun. They did plenty against Kain and Razzy in the TR:OT forum.

Calm down and have a laugh. You'll feel better. :)

If you want the thread open, then I would suggest people stop trying to restart the war after it's over and everyone's gone home, but that's just me.

KoolKat
06-01-2003, 10:39 AM
Rando, I never meant to restart anything. I was just saying not to take it so seriously, that was all. I said I was sorry, is that not enough. What do I have to do, leave the forum?

Yes, I saw what he said, so don't go there

Go where? I'm not a liar. I don't make up stories.

Ok, I'll leave this thread before I become the cause of another thread closure.

Honestly, I can't be bothered with trailers anymore, lol. I'll just wait until I get the game. And it better be worth the wait.

And I didn't know there was a signed treaty, my bad. ;)

Oh and by the way, it's not KoolKat that is trying to restart the war, but some uninformed TR fans...

The Amazing Rando
06-01-2003, 03:08 PM
Cycro, it wasn't just TR people, I saw at least 2 LoKers that joined in too.

KoolKat, throwing little jabs like "it was my fault, but only cuz he attacked me" is acting childish and would be what got this thread closed. The "don't go there" would be for a response like "Well, you didn't read what he said, you're just talking sides".

Umah Bloodomen

I think we can safely refrain from pointing anymore fingers (at members from either side, be they in the wrong or the right). Enough is enough already, and continuing to discuss it is going to further it even more.

How's that?

It's out for PC and PS2 only. There have been extended discussions in the TR section on that and nobody is happy with this fact. :(
