View Full Version : The Training Video

I just finished downloading and watching that video of the AOD training level. While it looks good, it almost seems TOO much like the earlier Tomb Raider games. I somehow expected AOD to feel like an all new experience, and yet this video makes it look just like TR5 but with better graphics. I won't comment on the collision detection and AI problems because I assume those will get fixed, but I do think that AOD is looking more like an "evolutionary" step rather than a "revolutionary" step (if that makes any kind of sense to anyone.) Even watching her dodge the lasers in the museum seemed so familiar, like something out of the Area 51 levels on TR3. Oh well, it still looks like a lot of fun, and I'm really curious to see how the dialogue system is implemented. I also hope they get the camera working better... looks really annoying as it is right now.

You posted some good points here, but do you really want to see a drastic departure from the previous games? I am glad that the 'cube' world is gone, but it pleases me that they did not remove any of Lara's old moves. I'm sure that if they had changed some of them this forum would be flooded by complaints saying that she's got the look but not the moves

I agree that it wouldn't be good to have a total departure from the old, familiar TR system. I guess I just expected something that felt a little different, whereas this so far seems very much like the older games, but with better graphics. Still, it looks very tempting to play, so I can't complain!

Would anyone be able to post the link to the training level or any of the other videos talked about on this thread?

I have to agree, when I watched the video, I thought "It's Tomb Raider..". I have to say I was indeed expecting something a little.. Newer, perhaps? I don't know, perhaps when we're actually in control, it will be completely different, but everywhere I read, they all say "The graphics may be improved, but the gameplay is pure Tomb Raider", or variations on such. Hmm..

Well, this seem like pure tomb raider to me, but don't forget that lara can talk to people now, which will make the game feel a lot different at times. Also her combat moves make up for something new. I just can't wait for the game...

I don't mind if they don't improve AoD that much. In fact I wouldn't mind if the game was exactly the same as before but with better graphics (even keeping the cubed environment) because I love this game as it is. I see each game as just the next installment in the adventure....like a comic book series.
I hope with AoD they don't "improve" things for the sake of it, just to show it is next generation. A lot of games out there have fancy features, weird gadgets and other novelty game concepts in an attempt to make them original and innovative. But this doesn't necessarily make them great to play and sometimes they just feel like cheap gimmicks...
I'm with LARAMANIAC...Pure Tomb Raider will definitely do for me!
