ok I'm not so sure whether this may have been discussed as i am new to this forum, but an close examination of all the lok games they all seem to stem around the fact the the guardian's are chosen from birth. and when they die a new guardian is born to take there place. example Ariel is murdered and Kain is born to take her place.
In BO1 Kain is killed right at the start so in my reasoning there should have been a new guardian born to take his place, therefore negating the need to sacrifice himself in the first place to restore the balance pillar .

Please if there is something i am missing fill me in.

Don't get me wrong i love all the lok games and will be camping outside the nearest games shop as soon as Soul Reaver 3 is out.

IIRC he wasn't selected as a guardian until he was reborn as a vampire.

jesta,

There's a little bit of inconsistancy between Silicon Knights' view on the Pillar guardians, and that of Crystal Dynamics. Silicon Knights did not seem to hold with the 'guardians from birth' theory, as they say Malek came to 'embody the spirit of conflict' following his punishment by Mortanius. Only then did he become a guardian.

However, as Crystal Dynamics control the series now, we generally have to accept their rules. Janos does specifically say that guardians are selected from birth. Kain has always been a guardian. But he doesn't have a successor.

The most convincing arguements I've heard for this are:

1) The Pillars are corrupted, and are therefore unable to call a new guardian to replace him.
2) Mortanius somehow prevents Kain's soul returning to the Pillar of Balance. As this is his binding token, it may stop a successor being born.

Overall, the first arguement is the most credible. There is no sign that new guardians replaced Nupraptor, Azimuth, Bane etc... even though their tokens were returned to the Pillars.

Also, I believe every corrupted circle member must die in order for the pillars to truly be restored, and for new members to be called. Kain's still alive, so the circle isn't completely destroyed, thus no new guardians can be born.
