… and which one is your all-time favorite? Which ones are you planning to get? In looking through my own collection, it has occurred to me that I tend to always want the games that involve A) shooting things, B) sneaking around and / or C) war… oh yes, and this is important, they are also REALISTIC. I don’t really go for stuff that’s too cartoonish. I guess my collection is pretty decent right now, but I’ll just bet there are some of you who have every good action shooter title available… anyone care to brag about your list?

I thought I'd see a lot more favorites listed. This is such a popular style of game. Favorites of mine include sof, mohf and splinter cell. I can't get over how amazing this game is visually. I love technolgy! What are you favorite visually stunning games? Platform?

I own three. DOOM II, Duke Nukem 3D, and Serious Sam. Don't care for shooters that much. Bore me.

Played Wolfenstein and found it entertaining until I started getting motion sick (this being back in the days when Jana of the Jungle was the other most downloaded and played shareware game).
Same sort of thing with Doom although I just got bored rather than motion sick. Consequently I ignored Unreal and Quake when they came out as just being more of the same (wasn't too far wrong).
The first FPS that really hooked me was probably the best in the genre: Half-Life -- it really did deserve all those awards. Actual plot, and gameplay besides the shooting. Note that it was/is so good that it's still with us today in the form of hundreds of 3rd party mods besides the world's most popular online MP game: Counterstrike.
Bought System Shock 2 and was blown away by the gameplay. RPG or FPS? Hard to decide. I did miss out on SS1, which I still regret to this day. Shodan has to be the evillest baddie in gaming history.
Deus Ex was also made by the same people as the System Shock games (ex-Looking Glass people) and it's probably the best game of all time (vying for the title with Ufo:Enemy Unknown and Civilisation). DX has to played to be believed -- it's a must buy.
The two NOLF games are fun expansions on the basic FPS premise -- the second game has also gone the RPG-element route.
Red Faction felt like a ripoff of the game I'd played before it: HL, NOLF. The much touted geomod destructable landscape was fun but they actually stopped you, via the level design, from using it like it should have worked (from circumventing the linear level designs).
The Aliens v Predator games were both fun. The second one had the stronger plot and flashier graphics (same people who do NOLF) but it lost a bit with that by-now-familiar bane of FPS games: linear-straighttrack-levels.
I got Quake3 hoping it wold replace the rapidly aging HL as the gamers' online choice. It didn't, mainly because the gameplay was still missing from the quake series, even if the graphics were far far better.
Just got UT2K3 and it's begining to appear as to be going the same way as Q3A. As an aside I do hear that Unreal2, although it currently holds the title of bestest graphics, has been voted the most linear FPS ever besides... :) Damn but they never learn...
I haven't played any others: they all either appear to cater to the military gore-porn crowd (SOF) or geek fanboys (Jedi Knight) or the straight porn crowd (Sin).

'Jedi Outcast' is possibly one of the most fun FPS games ever...it also shifts to 3PS midway - if you fancy. Good story too.
'Halo' is a must try....it took Half Life's crown by being the first game to successfully capitalise on what made that game so popular and distinctive...gameplay, atmosphere, variety, immersion, a story, innovation.
The PC version is due later this year I think.
Q3 and UT2003 are just shoot 'em ups...no story, no characters, no real levels to progress through. Just good ways to practice your trigger finger.

Yes, it looks promising. I haven't played the full version yet. Though, this is hardly a shooter in a true sense of the word.
If Moh:aa had gore, it would have been my favourite too.

If MOH:AA had gore, it would have been sensationalism, and not the respectful tribute it is.

I still enjoy Doom1 and 2 and can't wait for 3, and the first Quake (didn't like the second one though, it seemed to lose the atmosphere a little)
I like Serious sam, but it was just fast and furious shoot em up, not really a story.
If you want a free army based shoot em up (sort of) go to http://www.americasarmy.com and download their free game (about 200mb+)

Yeah, I completely agree. This game was very eerie at times. I think I understand what you mean. Xcom, SC may not be the classic shooter game but it seems like the hybrid of future games to come. At least I hoep so. What'd you play the demo. http://www.splintercell.com/us/ Is this where you got it or did you try it with a friend? Aren't the gadgets awesome!

Yes, I played the demo, two demos actually and I was seriously impressed by it. Unfortunately, a review in a local magazine spooked me. It appears that SC for PC is a direct port from Xbox, meaning there are absolutely no extras in the PC version whatsoever. A wasted opportunity, me thinks. NGC and PS2 versions will have extra levels and stuff , why not PC?
Ubi going after quick buck, eh? But depsite all, SC seems like a very nice game by itself so I haven't decided yet whether to buy it or to wait till it hits bargain bin (or rental).
Mohaa a tribute? I disagree. I don't play this kind of games to pay my respects.

As the events depicted in the game happened within living memory of some people, it would be dis-respectful to spatter it with gore, and turn a very serious subject matter into cheap trashy entertainment.
Sure there was blood spilt in WW2, and maybe its not quite so realistic in missing that element, but SOF2 has it in buckets, and I didn't finish that game feeling educated. ;)
As MOH was created by Spielberg in association with the Congressional Medal Of Honor Society (www.cmohs.org), yes - it is a tribute.
I do know what you mean about why you play it though. :)
ps...Splinter Cell on PS2 and GC is the same game as the others...all they have in the way of extras are a couple of new cut-scenes and some atmospheric effects (heat-haze etc) added that weren't finalised by the time the other ports were released.
Like all games...it'll look miles better on your PC anyhoo.
The Xbox is the only version that will have extra levels later in the day, downloadable via Xbox Live. The PC one won't.

Not necessarily. Depends on how it's done. Speaking of Spielberg, Saving Private Rian and Band of Brothers have a good portion of gore, don't you think? ;)
Anyway, I didn't imply it should be as exaggerated as in SOF games (with limbs and guts flying around) but I mean... "smoke" puffs instead of blood kinda kill realism for me.

I don't have any FPS games. I don't have that many action shooter either, mainly because my mom never let me get them. But now I can go buy them myself. So, out of the few that I have I like Metal Gear Solid the most. I just got MGS2 the other day, but I favor the first one. Socom Navy Seals is awesome also, but I don't have the patience for that game:rolleyes: Hitman 2 is cool, but I don't have it, nor would I have the patience for it.

Not really feeling the impact of a bullet on my person - or the consequences of killing someone else - always kills the realism in a videogame for me. ;)
Ryan and BoB were in a different form of media, one in which greater extremes of realism are possible - and indeed necessary.

Let's not go into the area of science fiction here. We both know that a video game is a video game and we are talking about realism within its boundaries. ;)
