Hi,

This is my first visit to these forums, and my first post so be kind! ;)

I was wondering what you guys think of PRIMAL (http://www.primalgame.com)? Personally I think this looks a lot more interesting than AOD does at the moment.

Having looked forward to AOD for ages I can't help but feel rather 'yeah whatever' at the moment for it; having looked at it at E3 (and I mean only LOOKED at it - they wouldn't let you play it because it was such a ropey version) then proceeded to be utterly disgusted by it at The Playstation Experience (loads of graphical glitches/gameplay mishaps) I've started to look elsewhere.

PRIMAL has a much stronger female character than Lara ever was - no lame PR stuff to pretend she's 'real' and no exploitation over the size of her chest; she's just a rather cool, ass-kicking chick!
The two-player mechanic also seems to be more interesting and interactive than Kurtis will be (who wants to play as a male anyways?) and ability to morph into four demon forms gives it that kind of Final Fantasy/Soul Reaver quality that raises the standards higher.
I don't mean to sound negative in any of this - but it just seems like Lara's time is up. PRIMAL seems to have better graphics, surround sound, more interesting characters, more dramatic combat and overall it's just 'fresh'. Lara is still Lara in all her angular still-low-poly glory and is the safe option, but for me PRIMAL looks like a whole new series that's gonna take off and overtake.

At the end of the day, AOD is gonna be "here's Lara again, look at the graphics, get your guns back, shoot-shoot, jump, climb, yeah yeah, seen it all before" whereas PRIMAL's gonna be "ooh who's that, what's he?, ooh new demon form, fight-fight, ooh completely new level, what's going on here?, big boss! etc.."

So then... I guess here come the flames(!)

Sorry, but the comparisons were bound to be made when you have two games coming out within weeks of each other with two female leads and I couldn't find this topic anywhere else!

Ya completly. I wanted TR to be cool but its slipped so much now that i got bored also and started to look other places. Primal looks absolutely brill and Deveil May Cry 2 is cool. Can't wait for either of them but yeah Jennifer looks much better than Lara ever did. I played the demo and it was great. Fighting those animal guys was awesome and the graphics were some of the best I've ever seen on PS2. I haven't seen anything like that in TR. You can even stealthkill in Primal. Love the music also Primal is going to roccccckkkkk! :-))))

I can only see one difference my friend, one has Lara Croft and the other doesn't. :p :)

All games are relative in that they're either entertaining or not to any individual, but having not played either yet, i'll save my judgement for another time. ;)

First of all, welcome to the forums :)

I was now going to give you a lecture about some comparisons you made that I really don't thing can be done, but I just don't feel like it, lol. So I'll just let someone else do that. Peace :D

First of all don't ask me how you could posibly compare Primal and Tomb Raider...they're both completely different sotrylines and atmospheric types. Tomb Raider AOD seems to have a different feel to it from the screen shots provided, Primal seems to have a heavy gothic influence, they're both competely different.

Besides, you can't make judgements about AOD if it hasn't even come out yet, it is supposed to be quite different to the past games, so your conclusions maybe correct, however they may also be wrong, maybe we should wait until the game actually comes out to start pointing the finger. Of course there will be elements from AOD that will be familiar to the past games, however PRIMAL is a new video game so of course there is going to be new and exciting enemies and characters, that's just common sense.

About Kurtis: I for one am more than happy to play as him, it will be good to play Tomb Raider from another person's perspective, yes a male's perspective...

And about the "stronger" character...hmmmm i think that's debatable. Eidos say that Lara has come back as a harder chick, and could be as "ass kicking" as the goth girl from PRIMAL.

However, I for one am looking forward to it coming out, although i swear i saw it available at target in Geelong, Australia. I SWEAR I DID!!!!

So, I think we should talk about this again when we can compare both games, it should be interesting I'm guessing.

hmm i dunno. id prefer tomb raider over it. its hard to compare a game you've played for years to something new :D

im really looking forward Primal, ive played the demo and it looks great, i cant really compare it to Tomb Raider since ive only played the first tomb raider for about 15 minutes sooo i dont know. i know i will be buying Primal once it comes out, i dont thik eidos has sold me on TR yet

I'm just a bit worried there hasn't been a demo out yet. There have been about three PRIMAL demo's in various places and they've been getting Review scores between 8 and 10. But AOD has only had Previews so far and they haven't been great ones at that citing camera/control issues, lack of enemies, and game length.
You're right, at the end of the day it's about sitting down and playing them next to each other, but in the meantime - from what I've seen/played - Jen Tate's gonna be getting my Valentine's Day card this year ;)

Ive just been to the Primal website and it looks pretty average to me. Prefer tomb raider to that sort of gothic stuff. Im gonna stick with TR.

Hmmmm. I've seen reviews of Primal although I haven't played a demo. From what I've seen it isn't a direct competitor to TR - well not for players like me.

Firstly, the emphasis on fighting - I don't play TR games to fight, I play to explore, discover things and use my brain working out puzzles. For me the fighting in TR is a minor part of the game enjoyment and that's why I like the auto-aim facility. Games like Devil May Cry are boring to me. It quickly becomes - enough already with the never-ending things jumping out that have to be killed in the same stupid way - ZZZZZzzzzzZZZZZzzzzz. I never bothered to finish it.

Secondly, a woman that changes into a demon.....?! When I play TR I get immersed in actually being there. Although it's supernatural in places, Lara is human and the world bears some relation to real-life. I can suspend my disbelief and enjoy the feeling I'm wandering through a world where strange things are happening. But playing as a woman that changes into a demon? I don't want to be a demon (especially an ugly, goth one). That would throw me out of the experience and then I would constantly be aware that I was just playing a computer game.

Having said that, if Primal has genuinely good gameplay and a good story then I'll give it a go :)

i like primal..however i did not like the R1 button being the only fighting button in the game...i hate when they do games like that i would love for all female characters to fight like buffy did for the xbox but without the super strength cause that wouldnt be fair. Also, in AOD (which i love by the way) i think lara fights too slow...i mean come on girl get that leg up there and kick butt!

Having not played it, can't say I know much about it.

Except its heroine looks pretty much like AoD Lara Croft with a tattoo, and I doubt that's by accident. For something so "fresh", you'd think they wouldn't be so obviously derivative.

If character strength is judged by how many demon-forms you can morph into, yep, guess Lara's pretty weak in that department.

Enjoy your "ooh, new demon forms", I'll enjoy my "get guns back, shoot-shoot, jump around, etc".

I totaly agree that primal is the best 3rd person action adventure game on PS2.

Being a UK gamer ive had the game 4 a couple of months now and have completed it many times.

The game looks and sounds amazing ( wen played in proper conditions i.e 16/9, 60hz ( europe only option ) and surround sound ) and the story is top notch.

I found the emphasis is on adventure and not fighting ( which is deceptively complex, using all 4 shoulder buttons and not just R1 )

Havnt played AOD yet but after primal lara has 1 hell of a fight on her hands.

Probably shouldnt have posted this on the TR forums but i just dont like people dismising a game based on reviews and screen shots.Play the game and make up ur own mind about it.

Primal is ace - but tragically rushed! When I think of Primal I think RUSHED. But I do love that game! I wanted to be able to go back and do more stuff - after the initial playing of the game completely, i wanted to go to the ferai world solum and change into wraith form and such...

i havent' played anything of tomb raider at all so i cant possibly compare...all i know is if its like blood omen 2 (which core were seen playing on a dvd for aod) then i'll loe it! camp characters all the way baby! im determined to love lara til death us do part- and she has this second chance grab thing so it looks like i shall be the one to die in this instance! ;)
