DE:HR (Steam) black screen freezes after Barret fight

First 4 hours of the game ran super smooth, then in some mission it started randomly black screen freezing after loading a save game. I eventually got through that part and the frequency of the save freezes greatly decreased and I've been able to play the game semi decently. Until now.

Now I'm on the boss fight against Barret, and every single time I beat him, after the finishing cutscene is over, the game black screen freezes. I've tried watching the whole cutscene, skipping the cutscene, but it all leads to the same end.

As for my system, I'm running on Windows 7 64Bit, Intel Core i5 2410M, 2.30GHz, 6GB RAM, GeForce GT 525M.

Any ideas or suggestions? :\

It's highly upsetting that I can't play a game I've legitimately purchased because of something like this. I've looked around the steam forums, these forums and random google pages but haven't found a solution to the problem.

Maybe getting a save file after the battle would circumvent the problem? But then comes the issue of getting it, and the fact that it's just sweeping the problem under the rug.
