I'm in the same boat as you--I'm geeked that I finally have a copy of Thief that should work on my computer! I'll be starting a new game soon and will be watching this thread with interest.

First, I would look at texture mods. There's some great ones and some not-so-great ones.
If you look here (http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/patches/), however, you should find a few texture packs. I particularly recommend oRGY's pack that replaces the meshes with higher-res meshes from Thief II. Makes the game look much better.
Important: Be sure to have a look at the accompanying readme.txt files, because oftentimes there's more involved in applying these patches than simply dumping some files in a folder. Often you have to make alterations to the cam.cfg file or some such as well.

Also, if I remember correctly, Thief (G) doesn't support widescreen, but there should be a mod somewhere (my T2 is widescreen, but I installed it 1 year ago).

I played through all Thief games at hardest level again last year and there is a texture mod for Thief Gold but don't expect miracles in the graphics department, there is also a widescreen mod for all three games, sorry cant remember where I found them, Google is your friend :)
Enjoy and savour though, they are some of the best games ever made especially the first two.

I must say i am about to do the same thing. After 12 years i am finally getting ready to go back to Thief Gold. I figured, i got tired of waiting for the new Thief game. Let the people at EM take their time. At least we know that someday we'll see a new Thief game (hopefully).
As for me, i can't wait for Thief no more so i am getting back to the good old times and play Thief Gold and then move on to Thief 2. Since the last time i played Thief was 12 years ago i dont remember anything about the missions or the levels so everything should be new again:D
I have my original copies of T1 and T2, so i will try to install them on windows 7 and in case i dont get it i will buy the game from the GOG site.
I will report my whole experience about getting back to the Thief universe here.
It is time!
See you Taffers!

It's been five years since I played Thief Gold, and I recall liking the extra levels very much. Like you guys, I may break it out again while waiting for the new game.
I did have trouble installing it back then on XP, and here is a fix that worked for me (it should work the same on Vista and 7):
"Go to Start, then Run, then type d:\setup.exe -lgntforce, where d:\ is your CDrom/DVDrom drive. (note: that's -lgntforce, lowercase "L". If you're unsure, copy and paste it from here.) This problem arises because Win2K and WinXP are based on the NT kernel, which had DirectX support which was flaky at best. Thief needs DirectX to run, so, when the installer sees the NT kernel, it assumes that the game isn't going to be able to run and quits the installation. The -lgntforce switch tells the installer to ignore the NT kernel and install anyway."
With regard to textures, etc. I am a purest who enjoys the games just as the creator made them, and I find the old, primitive graphics kinda like comfort food for the mind... but, hey, to each his own.

I have the original Thief Gold CD and tried early last year to install it and play it again but failed. I tried multiple methods etc. I am on a Vista 64 Bit system with an ATI video card. Is the GOG.com version any different from the original version?, are there compatibility updates that make purchasing the game from GOG.com worth while? Let me know as I would love to play the game again!

I also have the original CD of Thief Gold, and the Gamersgate version, and neither worked on my PC. I can confirm that the GoG version launched just fine on my x64 Win7 system, with just a bit of tweaking described in this thread (http://www.gog.com/en/forum/thief/tgfix_widescreen_resolutions_fixedimproved_graphics_etc/post48) to make it purr like a kitten!

No cutscenes with the GOG version -- probably because of the codecs thing. I thought about buying it again to run on my Vista machine, but I'll just bring my 98 / Voodoo rig out from mothballs to play Thief Gold. The cutscenes are half the game experience for me.

If you are running 64-bit Windows 7 you can register the proper codec for Thief's video files.
Run (as administrator) > cmd
cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64
regsvr32 ir50_32.dll
I needed to do this to play the videos on my system--I hope this helps!

FYI, this may help:
My ingame movies (briefings and cutscenes) aren't playing anymore, how do I fix it?
You have to reinstall the indeo video codecs. You will find them on Thief: TDP's disc, and on disc 1 of Thief Gold. If you have Thief 2, you can find them on CD2 (the file is iv5play.exe). In the past you could also download them from this site for free, but unfortunately the codecs have since turned pay-for. This problem often arises because of conflicts with some other programs such as Realplayer or Windows Media Player, the video codecs become corrupted and no longer work. There is an incompatibility between the Indeo codecs and Windows XP. If you wish to view the ingame movies and have Windows XP you must install the codecs every time you play Thief.

I got my GOG version running with DDFix here http://www.gamefront.com/files/17346916/ddfix-1.5.5-complete.zip/ other versions didn't seem to want to work.

After people saying that the GOG.com version worked for them, I puchased it, and using the advice on here and the patches, it now works perfectly! I cant wait to play some of the levels again and I hope GOG.com comes out with Thief 2 soon. Thanks for the feedback everyone and I`m super happy I can play one of the best games ever made once again!

You can tell that the devs had time to focus on those extra levels - they really add a lot of replay value, and every true taffer should have a copy of Gold... it's like the "director's cut" of TDP.

The Eidos forums for the original series are quite comprehensive for getting the original games running. Basically, the only thing that needs to be done for multi-core processors is to set the process affinity to a single CPU...either manually or with the program I wrote which launches executables with the desired affinity or some of the other programs which change the executable file. And, for Vista or Win7 you just need to right-click on the executable and select Run as Administrator or create a shortcut to it with compatibility settings to Run as Administrator.
These steps work for any programs written prior to the given technology or OS.

You're definitely going to want the widescreen mod, imo. There are also mods that upgrade the models and textures to Thief 2 quality.

Didn't work at all for me! Thought it may have been from all the fixes I had fom the original version, so I did what I was thinking about for a couple of weeks and installed a fresh copy of winblows. Still no luck but at least it would start (crashed at videos). The only thing that got it working was DDFix for me.

Thanks for the concern jaycw2309. For me, I actually am not using GoG, so no need to worry about me. I have the old games on original CDs (or is it DVDs?). But it sucks I can't get the vids to play still.
Same here. But I've never had a problem with the videos though.
Are you getting just a blank screen with no audio... or are you getting sound at least?

Sadly, I've tried it all, and some. I'll try testing other/different options not posted anywhere on my own someday. I think they worked for a while on Win7 for me a long time ago. I wonder if a MS patch, video card driver or software installation messed them up for good at some point.
have you try this?

Worst case scenario - just watch the videos manually. If they aren't on the disc or installed on your computer, download them from thief the circle - quit expecting a Windows 98 game to run on modern hardware and OS's.

Thief 2 is now on GOG.com! Not sure if it was there before. Link (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/thief_2_the_metal_age#) Once I complete Thief Gold, I`ll be purchasing this one! Awesome news!

That's hardly enlightening advice. Already knew and have done that. It's just nicer to have them in game as it helps the vibe. I only expect it to work because I know a solution exists, as you see from everyone that it's eventually possible, it's just a matter of finding it. Quit being condescending and trying to be someone else's parent.
You're right - I keep forgetting that some people here don't have other, more-important things to focus on - ya know, like families and careers. Maybe I should rearrange my priorities so I can have more time to play games and leave thousands of posts... I'll work on that, and thanks for the advice.

If you really want to play Thief 1 and 2 as they were originally, get yourself an old PC from Ebay or similar, wont cost much ... a couple of years ago I built up a PC for retro'ish games like this comprising of a Pentium 4 3.4 GHz that I actually used to own when it was bleeding edge (I'm on I7 2600K now) 2 gb ram and experimented with a few old cheap AGP graphic cards and also Win 98 and XP ... The first two Thief games would have originally been played on Win 98 as I recall?
For Thief Gold and Thief 2 it soon became evident that XP was fine though it was fun getting Win98 working again as best as possible, what the first two thief games don't like is multi core CPU's and yes you can get round that on modern machines by setting core affinity ... but for a more purist retro feel to play these games I found playing it on top end hardware of the day part of the fun, there was certainly no slow down on a Pentium 4 Northwood 3.4 (with HT turned off in BIOS) I think it was an AGP ATI 9800 pro I used for the two Thief games, though I tried about 3 different AGP cards for best results ... again cheap on Ebay.
I've still got the old machine built ready to play Thief Gold and T2 again, but next time will be with fan missions I think.
Although I was playing on older PC parts I still used a large widescreen LCD and that's where the wide screen mod came in handy, with a KVM switch I could go from that old PC to my uber I7 2600K, 8 GB ram, GTX 570 in seconds using the same LCD, Mouse and keyboard.
Just another idea for those trying to experience early Thief again as it was.

I'd recommend to add a Vortex 2 or other A3D capable sound card to this setup.
If they worked with Thief on old hardware of the time ... why not ... But I was using just an an old SB Live 16 for my Thief retro build with great results ... Soundblaster may not be the best sound cards just now, but they were back then.
If anyone's interested I'll dig out my retro Thief PC and its specs and posts pics too if it helps.
I guess I just found it fun putting together an old PC that would have been cutting edge when Thief came out and re-playing it that way instead of trying to make it work on my I7 modern computer.
I'm finding a taste for retro games too I guess.
