So, browsed a bit and have tried a variety of ways to get this to work with no luck. I blame Steam for offering Thief: Deadly Shadows for cheap. It got me thinking - I have a Thief Gold cd set somewhere; let's see if I can install it!

The answer: Not even close.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A665D laptop with AMD Phenom II Quad-Core, 4Gb memory, and ATI Radeon HD 4200 Series. Win7 home 64-bit.

I have ONE game-play disk, which meant I had to find an install disk. Even with that, I can adjust compatibility settings on the install exe files with no luck. It simply won't install to the point I can add any fixes of any sort. I have been to the John Anthony Curran site, the Thief: The Circle site, and the ttlg site (Win 7 specs) and all recommend a full install prior to applying new-model adaptations, which I can't do.

ETA: I have dl'd DDFix and no, the d:\setup.exe -lgntforce doesn't work.

I'm hoping whatever I am doing wrong is a relatively easy fix. Any ideas?

I had no problems installing and running Thief Gold with Windows 7 64-bit without anything other than the install disk and game disk...albeit I have the original retail disks. The first thing I did was just try installing without any modification...when I launched the setup.exe application I got a popup indicating that Thief Gold cannot be installed onto NT 4.0 due to DirectX issues. Then I noticed on my Thief Gold CD jacket I had a stickie with -lgntforce on it. So, I created a shortcut to setup.exe and added the -lgntforce switch plus selected to run as administrator and the installation went flawlessly.

So, could you provide some details on what exactly is happening? Are you getting an error message? If you try to install Thief Gold without any modification do you get the NT 4.0 issue error message? If not then the install disk you have may have been modified or your Windows 7 installation may have some problems which your attempt to install Thief Gold is simply making you aware of...do you have any other symptoms of an unstable system?

Have you tried the step-by-step instructions I posted in the sticky: How to make Thief 1 run on a modern computer (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=76532&page=2)?

I don't get any messages whatsoever, which would be the majority of the problem, I think. ;) I made the nice lil desktop shortcut and added the -lgntforce. I get the same pop-up as always asking if I want unknown publisher to make changes, click yes, and then boom - nothing. No activity, no install, no message past this one. *scowls* It's rather frustrating. Okay, I might get an hourglass for about 3 seconds. That's it. I was under the impression that all the mods came after the original install, which won't install. so it's a pure straight-from-(virtual)cd install. Never had a problem getting anything to install from PowerISO before.

Whoa...now here is a funny turn of events. Decided to reboot (after all, why not?) and lo and BEHOLD! About ten install windows pop up out of nowhere. That could be slightly problematic if it wants to install via invisible windows. >_<

Update: WOOT! Mon Dieu! It finally installed! Now I can add the mods and whatnot. I may be back though, if win7 decides to get all huffy again. Many thanks. :D
