"Despite selling millions in Europe, the commandos brand of tactical turn-based strategy hasn't sparked the same enthusiasm stateside. Catering primarily to the core fan base, No. 3 in the series will add some action and "wow" factor. Almost visually identical to those in commandos 2, the supremely detailed backdrops still look spectacular. Personnel changes on the development team could indicate a retooling of the oppressively difficult startegic elements. A focus on explosive set pieces and scripted action sequeneces should make this sequel more accessible, though you'll still control the same commandos from the second game, with scenarios set in European locations. We're hoping that this enticing strategic series can up the oomph factor sufficiently to catch on with U.S.-based strategy gamers. Its feature-packed gameplay style deserves a wider U.S. audience."

Release is still set for June 2003

I don't know why it hasn't cought on in the US. I certainly wrote a good review of the unending fun I had at Combatsim.com. I have a feeling that thr RTS crowd like the huge armies and battles with lots of stategic stuff to do instead of half squad strength commando format.

Iv'e been playing extremely heavily for the past 6 months and still find new slants on going through a mission.

now is there an association between the fact that people don't visit the forums anymore and the above statement ?

you refering to mine statement ;)
you know,i guess people who didnt got involved into comunity too much have no reasons to return there again if they not playing it. and also there is couple of such fans like we are who stay there till it closes.
and if you got game, you go to foums ask questions about it.after you done you leave forums. there is other games and other foums.

then yes,those statemts are dependad

Well, I have my hands full with General Eidos Forum, so it's not really more work I am looking for. Just Commandos company. ;)

Yeah, Xcom is a true Commandos Veteran....he was firmly positioned in the community, when I had just learnt about BEL....(approx. in 1997-98, don't blame me if I get the dates wrong !)

So he is the oldest Commandos Fan around.....according to my calculations...

Scripted Sequences, meaning in-game movies, which are fairly new to strategy games....
Explosive Set pieces ??? Looks like we have got a Micheal Bay movie here....

There's lots of aspects of C2 that many have not explored. In, say, Colditz, you can "feature" one or a pair of commandos to move throught the mission the way Fins is the only one you have in White Death to begin with. Play on normal to experiment how wild and careless you can get so you can revive commandos, go on and say "that didn't work."

Forget about scores, ranks and silly medals. Just accomplish the missions in the many ways it is possible.

You can run Paris Burning and move Duke out to pick off some goons. Spooky and Natasha can take down most of the goons in the building another time. Steal the truck and move everyone to the building quickly. Spearhead throught to get Tread into the tank quickly and drive around squishing the goons for fun.

Sent Fins under water in Savo to get to the plane and send Green Beret after him to approach it from a different way. Let Inferno use the cannon to blow away bunches of the goons for fun.

It's nearly endless and limited by your imagination only.

It means things like the air raid in the movie, as well as the paratroopers coming in, things activated by triggers.

One thing I wish they would do is have a GUI based mission editor, so we could customize all the missions for ourselves, the inability to mod the game killed what was left of the C2 community after the long wait.

BTW I doubt Xcom is the oldest (time wise), but one of them, Iakovos was here for a while, I only came in 1998 under a dif name, also there was sam_nutz, J23, kyle quite a few...

Rutam

Xcom had a different name then. Jim started Dropzone after Casablanca....there was another old site, I don't remember the name but it was run by some guy called Andreas (I have him on ICQ, but his profile isn't updated). So if there are ppl from thar "era" around then they sure are true fans.
Yes, Iakovos is also a candidate...the problem is that people change nicks overtime making it difficult to trace.

Yeah Yak- any game without a mission editor sucks. Admittedly this is a complex game but it is possible to do. It all comes down to cost vs. profit and most companies just don't see any title long term. Yet this is what makes classic games that have huge followings.

Another thing is the fact that it is impossible to mod. Many, many games are written in plain English in several pertinent files making for easy modding. Look at ANY title that has a huge fan base that has spawned many fansites. They're full of modded files that keep the title alive for years.

While C2 is relatively popular it doesn't begin to compare to a title with a mission editor and modable files.

Ha, I remember him. LOL. There was also Liquid with his Gestapo Editing site but I think he started later. And where is Satan? Did dingoes got to him or what? :D

Rutam

Yeah ok here are the ppl I knew...and are now non-existant (even on ICQ)

1. Satan
2. Lucifer (He is the real the Dingo Victim)
4. Andreas
3. Some guy I don't remember (he was a Brit, and the last active webby for casa), but I know the name of his own website....called WW2 Games....he used to run after casa for a while.

I ran Casa for a week and things got messy (Long Story, I was 13 then), so I got kicked....end of the story....

And Xcom, what happened to your editing site (if I recall well) ?
It contained stuff like moving building co-ords and all.

Good ol days....and do you remember the lanzallamas ? ahhh

I just hope there are people in the community who still know what the above text means...well if they do they are really OLD !

David

Well, it's a long story.. I had abandoned it for some time. Then I decided to go on with it. I made a major update with really a lot of new editing content, couple of more new mods, new site design etc (it was some time after release of BTCOD). ...but suddenly my pc was infected with a virus and I had to reformat the hard drive. Everything was lost. Beside that, I also lost the ftp password for Geocities (the site was hosted there). I couldn't request it either (long story). So, I thought screw it.. I wasn't about to redo everything. And then there was silence....

But no so very long ago I was contacted by Jim Morris who asked if he could mirror the site because it still contained some usefull stuff and I sent it to him (old version of which I had back up). It can be found in Dropzone under editing section, I think.

I do because I found it ;).
Has anybody been able to make it work since?
