View Full Version : Strange graphical glitches with SSAO

Hello
I've got some strange effects from using SSAO. When SSAO is on normal, I get faint, straight dark and evenly spaced lines on some surfaces (I think it might be linked to reflectivity of the surface in question whether they appear or not) that stretch from top to bottom.
When moving or turning, said lines move with me.
Incidentally, the whole SSAO effect forms a "pattern" that moves when I move...
Switching SSAO to high makes the lines disappear, but in that case I seem to suddenly be affected by a mild case of the stuttering bug.
Patch had no effect on the whole issue.
Ideas?

Gigabyte GTX460 OC
Win7 64bit
4GB ram

Here they are. The patterns you see where SSAO is supposed to be, follow the camera when moving.
SSAO High: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/541778882140308347/E339F4B384CCF2E12A979239708CB83C42B45D93/

SSAO Off: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/541778882140319882/9911E810755054BA906814F9A3D8EB1971752725/
Vertical SSAO Artifacts. Left wall. Also follow the camera in the same manner. I've only seen these with the normal SSAO setting, but have been told by an another user on the forums that they're also present in the PS3 version:

Any word on if I'm experiencing a bug, or if it's actually supposed to look this bad will be greatly appreciated :). This isn't "different" or "technically more accurate", it's an abomination :p.
I decided to make a video (http://tinyurl.com/3sw7k7a) to show the weird SSAO effect that i was talking about. You could see the weird effect more clearly starting on 01:20.
I'm pretty sure uploading the video to youtube will decrease the quality a lot and make it hard to see the weird ssao fx that i was talking about, so i decide to just give the link to the video instead.
The topic has been discussed in the 'Future patches' thread to no avail, so I'll just quote myself and pariah here, in hopes that more people see the post and recognize it as an issue :).

So I'm not alone it seems.
Did anyone try the new NVidia beta driver?
I'm a bit reluctant to install a beta driver as long as I do not have any major issues that should be fixed by it, but I heard that SSAO performance might be better in some cases.

The in-game implementation of SSAO in DX:HR is lacklustre IMO. It is often too subtle, making environmental lighting look flat/dated, and at others times it stands out in completely the wrong way because it looks bitty/grainy and moves with the camera. It is certainly the weakest SSAO I've seen in a DX11 game to date.
While I've been told this look is more accurate, this is a game with heavily stylised visuals that are in no way photo-realistic, therefore, a more traditional form of SSAO would work better I feel. I'm hoping that NVIDIA will add SSAO support for the game in the drivers so we can force it through the game profile as an alternative to what the game has. I very much doubt the developers will change what the game already has.

I really can't see how they can say this is more "accurate" or "realistic". It just isn't. When was the last time you saw grainy shadows that follow your eyes in real life?

Exact same thing here, SSAO look like smoke and when moving I move, the smoke animates! No SSAO is better than this...
