While developing Thief IV, here are some titles (video games or no) that I hope the developers will be taking inspiration from:

Inpirational titles:
Thief II (pretty much THE Thief experience, even today)
Thief (great story and cutscene style, slightly more so than Thief II)
Mirror's Edge (first-person platforming done properly)
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (their sound system is awesome)
No-one Lives Forever 2 (Monolith made some fun reacting AI behaviour)

Also, I hope the developers will look to some uninspirational titles for how NOT to develop Thief IV:

UNinspirational titles:
Splinter Cell: Conviction (DON'T dumb down stealth! not for console, not for ANYTHING!)
Prince of Persia (DON'T Make Thief IV third-person, it will ruin the ambience and mood)
Tomb Raider: Underworld (DON'T use the Deadly Shadows girl as a player character)
Assassin's Creed II (Garrett is NOT an assassin, just a great thief with a blackjack)

I apologize if this has been posted before. If not, feel free to add your personal suggestions for inspirational and uninspirational titles below.

I think the Penumbra series is a pretty good example as to what the devs can do to introduce the slow door opening mechanic.

Yeah, door control would be a nice addition to the game.

Yeah, Penumbra's been recommended many times over the years, and a lot of Thief fans appreciate the game, and have cited the environmental interaction as something to look at for another Thief game. The Dark Mod has certainly taken inspiration from it. Before that, I remember people trying to get the mouse scroll-wheel to open doors incrementally, with speed based on how fast the player scrolled.

Nice idea for the slow door control. That would certainly add to the immersion and to the gameplay to be carefull of the noise and the movement that makes the door when you open it.

Back when I first heard about the new oil flasks for TDS, I thought maybe applying them to squeaky doors and rusted metal objects would be something they would be useful for, not shattering loudly on the ground and making a mess and creating walls of flame or watching pratfalls. lol

How does Tomb Raider:Underworld relate to the scenario of "irrational protagonist change"? The protagonist doesn't change in TR:U.

Is there a secondary major character to fuss with?

No One Lives Forever 2 and the first one for the matter, is probably one of the better games no one has ever played. Like Garrett, only he hasn't been seen.

I'd probably say though that from the beginning the Monolith crew would have taken inspiration from the first two Thief games. The AI is just like in Thief hilarious as you say and you catch a lot of funny dialogues between guards etc.
