Hey all,
I just found and watched this movie called "Following". It was Christopher Nolans first feature and hes my fave writer/director. Its about burglary and all the good stuff. Set in early 90s London theres alot here for thief fans to love, even with a couple rooftop scenes ;)
Its a really good movie and I think you'll enjoy it.

Also by complete coincidence I found a movie called "The Machinist" with Christian Bale. It was in the sidebar of youtube for the Following trailer. No idea what its about though. Its got a high rating and good reviews so Ill chek it out. Even though its got nothing to link with thief lol.

edit: I realise now a Machinist is different from a Mechanist lol sorry.

Yeah, The Machinist is a psychological thriller mystery, but it's mostly known for the fact that for the role Christian Bale lost as much weight as his doctor and film crew (and the insurance companies) could stand and then lost more weight and freaked everyone out, and only when he stayed professional and appeared to suffer no ill effects did people relax. He also gained it all back and packed on muscle for Batman Begins immediately following the filming for Machinist. He packed on too much muscle and had to ease up. Hahaha! He said the craziest thing about being so skinny was that he couldn't get drunk, and he really tried.

Anyway, I read the script for "Following". It was published in a book, along with Memento after Memento came out and the Nolan brothers became celebrated filmmakers, and it was just the two scripts and a little about the stories and how the brothers work, with a fair bit of comparing and contrasting the two works. Its worth a look. I still haven't seen the film, so I thank you for reminding me of it.

I found it here. I don't know if there are regional restrictions, or anything else...

the elephant man is good too. old dirty streets with broken steam pipes and coal feeding stoves and oil lamps and freak side shows and rubble and wagons. real nice

David Lynch's film, with John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, and John Gielgud? Yeah. Even his Dune has stuff that fits in with the steampunk aesthetic.

Some of The Extraordinary League of Gentlemen, like in the beginning with the credits and with Mr. Hyde running amok over the city, is Thiefy, and there are familiar qualities about the cityscapes and machines in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Im talking more about the theme of theivery and the issues surrounding that more than steampunk in movies. Where can I get this book your talking about Jtr?

Yep. And I'm talking about movies that remind of Thief without really being much like Thief and I wasn't talking just steampunk. :p

I believe this is it:

EDIT: Hahaha! Interesting! There's a Tim Burton's Batman logo on the outside of the lead character's apartment door!

And later on, a pair of candlestick holders are stolen! :p
And later on, the words, "He's a thief, not a murderer," are spoken!

I just found this, after looking to see who played a side-character:

There is also a film called Vidocq http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0164961/ which might strike the thief fan as interesting.
