In case someone else is lucky enough to have this unlikely problem:
For me, the crashing was fixed after I found I had selected the unconnected channel of my 4 channel audio card as default and changed it back to the connected channel.
I installed the game on my pc running vista ultimate. I played the first level briefly, then stopped. Later, I installed other software. When I played the game it would crash before loading (screen goes black then an error message appears saying the program has stopped working).
I updated video and audio drivers and installed the 1.1. patch and nothing changed. Then I noticed no sound was happening and changed the default speakers back to the channel that is connected and no more crashing...
