Crashing in Mercenary Mode

I have a Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM and an 8800GTS 640GB (the older one), running Windows 7 64-bit, with the Steam version of Just Cause 2. I was able to play the game through the story mode, but now, loading a game, it freezes as soon as the "mercenary mode" text comes up after loading. This applies to multiple games saved in Mercenary Mode. It does this even at the lowest possible graphics settings.

Any way to make my game work again?

Have you tested loading older saves?
