View Full Version : Game not launching (Win 7 64, Steam)

I downloaded the game from Steam (where I purchased it), and get nothing but about two seconds of black screen, then it's back to the desktop with no error message.
Thus far I've tried running steam as admin, running just cause 2 as admin, installing new ATI drivers (10.3 I think, released on 3/24), verifying the game cache, unplugging logitech joystick (people seem to be having issues with these, though I'm not sure it would cause a crash).
Next I guess I'll try reinstalling .NET, and redownloading the whole game. Any other ideas? I'd sorta like to play this.

Tried reinstalling .NET, and redownloading the entire game to no effect.
I still get a momentary black screen, then nothing.

Not sure if it will help, but I guess it can't hurt.

Your machine spec is very similar to mine, i am running 64bit windows 7, radeon 5870, 4gb ram on an intel cpu.. game works fine for me, altho as i keep saying having similar hardware, or even identical hardware isnt a sure fire test for things but at least shows that its not a global issue..
Am just looking up in google about kernelbase.dll causing crashes..
What antivirus/firewall security software you running?

Running Microsoft Security Essentials and no software firewall but the one built in to windows.
I guess if worse comes to worse, I'm upgrading to a Core i7 in a month or so, and reinstalling Windows might take care of it, but I'd rather not wait that long to start shooting stuff.

do u know if steam/justcause2 exe has been added to the windows firewall?

Steam definitely, as I pretty much run games exclusively through it anymore (Bad Company 2 most recently). The JC2 exe no, but it didn't seem to be asking. I'll see if there's a way to manually create an exception for it tonight when I'm back at my machine.

If you goto control panel and then to system/security, under the Windows Firewall heading there is the `Allow a program through the Windows Firewall` option..
This will show you the current list of exes allowed thru the firewall.. if you dont see Just Cause 2 listed then goto `allow another program`. This will bring up the dialog box for you to browse to the steamapps\common\just cause 2 folder and add the justcause2.exe file.

No luck there :(
Running out of ideas here.
edit: Just Cause 2 had already added itself to the list of exceptions
edit2: running system file checker (sfc /scannow) in the hopes it will find something wrong with my machine...

Ran a repair install of Win7 this evening and the problem is resolved... Not really sure what it was, and it was a fairly drastic measure, but hey, it works.
Thanks for the help.

when you installed a repair, did it wipe out any files?

i have done multiple repairs it doesn't usually wipe a drive but can if your not paying attention to the prompt screens.
