View Full Version : In reply to the horrible Mercs 2 posts...
Okay, so I was reading the "Mercs 2", which was someone asking if he should bother getting the game Mercenaries2 and what not. So I continued on reading, suspecting that just about everyone would say he should get it if he like open world games, or if he like Just Cause 2. But to my surprise, everyone was slamming it ? I don't possibly see how. Not only is it the best example of an open world shoot 'em up, but a lot of the gameplay in Just cause 2 pays amage to this great title and its original. As we all know by now, the Black Market is not the best thing in the world, with only being able to order one thing at a time, and the almost funny prices, it is flawed in many ways. If you look at Mercs 2 shop, it is perfected in ever way. Reasonable price, many many items, having it delivered via helicopter in real time, it is basically a phat version of the Black Market on Just Cause 2. Not only that, but the gun play isn't underwhelming, seeing as how their is over 30+ weapons, and that it is basically shoot 'em up since the AI is almost non existent (Just Cause 2's AI isn't exactly great either). Their are just about the same amount of cars, but you are able to order every one of them in the shop, and their is a lot more variety than in Just Cause 2. Their is a grappling hook, but only to hijack copters, so that is one thing unique about Just Cause 2. The button sequence in Just Cause 2 is basically a rip off of Mercs 2, but done better since all vehicles with soldiers in it fight back. Their are airstrikes in Mercs 2, which is its big thing, and adding on that everything can be blown to hell is unique (forget red guerrilla faction, now thats a horrible game). I enjoyed the voice acting, seeing how it did have its funny moments, and even Just Cause 2's voice acting isn't total crap (in fact Rico's voice is done quite well in some places). Mercs 2 was rushed to be released by EA, and was not completely finished when released to the public, resulting i n many bugs, a few more than just cause 2 has. I really enjoy both games, but I would have to say Mercs 2 is my favorite, because i'm a mercs (not to mention Pandemic [which is now closed :(]) fanboy. My point here is that Just Cause 2 is a Mercs 2 clone, but done with justice. Even with some features being superior in Mercs 2, Just cause 2 really perfected most of them. It also has better graphics (even though it released a few years later), has better car mechanics, better movement, better flying gameplay, better missions than Mercs 2, along with some other minor details. Any one who likes open world games should automatically bow down and worship any of the mercs games when announced. I don't know, but its just chills me to see someone dis' that great game :hmm:

I loved the original and consider it one of the best games for teh PS2/X-Box. Mercs 2 was rushed and you can feel it. The game play just felt off. The controls did not seem as tight. Some graphic choices (tank exhaust for one) seemed really poor. Mercs 2 was a missed opportunity.
I would say JC2 is more of a spiritual succesor to the original Mercs than Mercs 2 was.

I would say JC2 is more of a spiritual succesor to the original Mercs than Mercs 2 was. This is quite true actually. From the many colonels scattered around the map, similar to Mercs and their Deck of 52 hit-list, and the similar feel of the Black Market (I still love the interface of the Merchant of Menace though). Just Cause 2 appears to be everything that Mercs 2 wanted to be.
Just Cause 2 even has a better waterfall. (You have to admit, for a game that includes the ANGEL FALLS, Mercs 2 did a pretty terrible job of replicating the tallest waterfall in the world).

I have one even better. Playing Mercs 2 I used a motor cycle to jump a small ramp into a Chinese base. I was getting pretty chewed up with snipers in towers, a tank running in circles around the building and just general foot soldiers. As I was running around the building I noticed a doorway that was set slightly in the building so I ducked in to regenerate some health or at least get out of the line of fire. As I was standing there it started to rain soldiers. Actually the soldiers on the roof were trying to get to me and were just walking off the roof and of course dying upon impact.
Doing a certain mission today in JC2 I noticed that the soldiers on these tall towers would jump off trying to get to me but would use a parachute.
Pandemic just didn't think a lot of things through.

I just had my tv calibrated aswel and the graphics are very shoddy, you can see the damn pixels when panning the camera. It was one game i was looking forward to like but one i kept putting on the back burner because there was others that i wanted first.
Just a real shame that it didn't deliver as the potential was certainly there.
How was multiplayer co-op? That was one aspect i was unable to try due to the title screen crash!
After a lot of hours playing Mercs 1, I was really looking foward to the sequel. Until EA took over that is, by that time I just gave up. First, I knew that they would just crap on the franchise as usual. And secondly, I don't buy any games from EA anymore. But I maybe inclined to buy Simcity 5 if it surpasses the prequel, but I really don't see that happening. They already destroyed the Maxis I loved.
Even the music of Mercs 2 suck compared to it's prequel.
