View Full Version : Probably just the wind...
I've been reading these forums less and less over the past 6 months or so, to the point where i had completely forsaken them. I came back to find most of the sane posters still providing logic and well structured arguments, and defending what they (and myself) perceive as "a true Thief game". The constant arguing with those who want Thief be turned in to GTA, Assassin's Creed or something similar is what made me forsake this forum and just wait for whatever Thi4f is and make my judgment then.
Still though, apart from suggestions for Thief 4, bashing TDS and (righteously) praising Thief 1/2/T2X/FMs, i find a lack of threads that are worth reading.
So I'm asking you guys what part of your lives is the Thief series?
I can't seem to completely detach myself from the games. Sure i can go for a month or so without playing, but I'm still reminded of the City when i see a the full moon in the starlight sky and i'm making my way trough scarcely light streets. I've watched video guides to lockpicking and have considered making my own tools. I've had Thief dreams, more than one to be sure.. Even though I'm 24 and i have other things to do (work for example, curse this modern society :D) I don't think i'm ever giving up on these games.
In that regard, even if Thief 4 is a complete bust (something i'm hoping it's not), i will still hold the Thief games dear. If T4 is all that i had hoped for, I think I'll have to live like a teen again and spend most of my time gaming instead of doing more "adult" things proper to my age :D

lol yeah I know what you mean but with a game like Thief we can be excused for not behaving like adults. Its just too damn good.

While I'd say it has had more influence on my life than 95% of the games I've played (as in my behaviors, attitudes, etc) I still wouldn't say it's terribly significant.
I'll probably be a gamer forever as well - it's my version of cracking a book under a lamp light, or staying up and watching horrible television shows. It's my preferred medium of entertainment, and it probably always will be.
you can grow up and keep on enjoying thief at the same time :)
When I stared to study the history of human ideas (deals with how we humans have developed our understanding of the world between 5000 before christ and present day) I discovered a whole new dimension in thief. The influences of which the thief universe is built upon is quite complex and there is a lot to it.
But the biggest part which has influenced me from thief is how it changed my perspective on shadows and darkness. It is not scary anymore, but rather comforting. ^^
In any other context that would have sounded really goth ^^
nothing wrong with a bit of goth ;)
plus I'm over 50 and still play, if I haven't grown up by now then I'm not going to

I recognise that too!
After a lot of thief I wasn't afraid of what's in the dark any more, others should fear me while in the dark:cool:

Been obsessed with it since 2000. Played & beat TDP but for some reason that game didn't click with me like TMA did.
Like you, I can't ever completely detach myself from it. I find myself either playing it for the hundredth time or if not that then writing or drawing something Thief-related.
I remember a few years back when I beat Deadly Shadows for the first time... I stepped out of my room and looked down the hallway... and I was suddenly hyper-aware of where all the shadows were and how much cover they would provide. Still makes me chuckle to myself.

I once wrote a THREAD that said the very same thing that you guys have said, but it got closed for some reason.
I outlined how influencial Thief can be, but apparently no one believed me. Thanks for giving me some credibility, good people of this thread.

Yep! We've bemoaned the lack of new ideas for months now. We haven't been given much to work with but what already exists.
Yep! T4 is made by different people for a different time, so it will have no effect on my love for the classics. It would awesome if T4 was a perfect fit and elevated the series as a whole, but come on... :p
I've gotten into several creative endeavors as a result of playing and adoring the Thief games, and these led to meeting new awesome people, and new creative endeavors, and it's snowballed. As long as I love Thief, I will never run out of friends and ways to pass time constructively. I'm not one of those people who fear retirement for lack of purpose and meaningful use of time. I look forward to not having to give my best energy away for others I don't know to profit from, so I can really drown myself in my projects and collaborations.
