How do you grapple on to gas canisters?

I know what you mean, I had the same problem but realised you had to go right up next to it then grapple to it. If there's a better way please may someone tell us because my way is ****.

You have to hit the very top of the cap for him to grapple on to it. And then just shoot it and lift off :)
