I have to do a written analysis for it, it needs me to do 800-1000 words...

I need to analysis the first 15 minutes of it about GENRE and NARRATIVE.... (if you have seen it, the 15th minute is showing helen with the cut near her eye had sat down on the bed and Gerry is kneeling before her saying she's in shock)

since i am not a native english speaker... so please help me, am i in the wrong direction?

Here my current work goes, it's not done yet i know.

AS Film Studies - Written Analysis

The movie I am going to be analysing genre and narrative is the first
fifteen minutes of Sliding Doors (1997).

Before I start watching it, by listening to the title, I have no idea of
what the genre of this movie is.

This movie is based on present time, London. Specific locations include the
main characters¡¦ apartment, underground stations, the river Thames,
hospital, and some streets. Helen and Gerry¡¦s apartment plays a major role
in the first fifteen minutes. It also features upbeat and fast-paced pop
music.

The first shot shoots at the river, and then it pans to a view of a bridge.
Then using a Serif font, it shows that the movie tends to aim at a slightly
serious direction. Immediately the screen fades into a bird's eye view over
the river Thames. This gives audience a clue that this movie will be based
on present London, and lets me think of some significant landmarks may be
introduced like the famous Underground and the Thames. The background music
starts featuring a woman's vocal, singing pop music.

The camera then starts in a waist-height focusing a cup of coffee, spilled
by a dark-dressed lady on a book. She just slightly cleaned up of the book
and slid it into her handbag, which is also black. That explains she was in
a hurry since she didn't care about the spill on the makeup table, and
throwing the tissue paper on the floor. It is possible that she left the
coffee overnight for her work but didn¡¦t finish the drink before sleep. Even
so she was in a hurry she was dressing well-ironed clothes and she did comb
her hair, explains this woman is organised. Also she is sensitive enough to
give her boyfriend a kiss before leaving the scene.

After she leaves the apartment, her boyfriend Gerry opens his eyes from his
fake deep sleep and hangs up the phone so nobody could call. Then he gets
out of bed. That says Gerry is up to something that he doesn¡¦t want people
to know.

Doors slides open, a lady walks out and we finally see the lady¡¦s face along
with the caption ¡§Gwyneth Paltrow¡¨. Helen walks very quickly with a worried
look in the tube station. Half-walking-and-half-running out of the
Embankment Station, she makes a call for breakfast, which means she is
already late for work. The weather is nice and sunny, and the pop music
behind is a happy one. The screen suddenly flashes back into the apartment
where Gerry is going to take a shower. At the same time Helen gets her
breakfast with a cheerful smile, that says people around London in this
movie are friendly and out-going. Helen then rushes to buy some bottles that
we later know are vodkas.

Helen rushes into an building, which has a nice, big, clean, well-lit and
well-designed lobby with security guards. That shows that Helen works in a
quite nice environment, and that company has to be a big one. And this
office lobby is almost empty, which explains it is not the time for normal
custom workers to go to work. Helen drops her finished breakfast into the
bin and continues her way to the lift. She rushed out of the lift and the
music fades out. The first word that we hear from Helen is ¡¥****¡¦, and she
kept whispering it until she reaches the office. She knows she is very late,
everyone has settled down and has been working, so she tries to cheer them
up by saying their lines: ¡¥Hello Helen, I¡¦d almost forgot you work here,¡¦
and drops the bottles onto a desk. The office enjoys a nice view by the way.

Helen takes off her coat and goes into the conference room where there are a
few men waiting. They fired Helen, which they wanted for a long time, thus
using a strange reason for firing ¡V getting out of vodka, which Helen
manages to replace. The men in the conference room are aggressive to Helen.
Annoyed, Helen left the office.

The camera suddenly focuses on a woman¡¦s leg and pans up, showing a woman
who is looking at someone while undressing. Gerry leans on and closes the
door. Gerry is having an affair. The background is Helen and Gerry¡¦s party.
A slightly mysterious music fades in but changes into a sad music when it
snaps back to Helen.

Helen walks into the lift and drops an earring. A short man kneels and picks
it up for her. Helen says ¡¥Thank you,¡¦ and the lift closes the doors. She
walks out of the building and enters the underground station. That short
man, though not in focus, is in front of her. The underground station is
clean and neat; it uses cool lights, which doesn¡¦t give a ¡¥home-feeling¡¦.
Helen hears a train approaching, so she starts moving to the platform. A
little girl who holds a Barbie in her hand, which is made to pretend walking
on the handrail, blocked her. Helen runs towards the train, but couldn¡¦t
make it before the doors close.

Im sure that at the begging of the film during the credits someones shopping or walking out the shop carrying bags? or have you mentioned that? Your essay looks really good from what i saw i did that essay earlier this year and i wrote half that as i remember and still got a C. You should try what i do and that is to write aload of pointless sentences which have little ot do with what your doing but som how still connect to the film and essay. If your in need of alot of help you should go see the teacher only if you get on with them of course otherwise dont bother. My mum has the film on video somewhere so ill see if i can find it but i havnt seen it all yet i just walked in on a couple of scenes, sorry. Thats all the help i can give for now though.

Are you sure that by 'analysis' they mean a shot by shot dissection of the movie?

It seems to me that they might be asking what you thought it all meant - the relevance of certain angles, composition of shots, editing techniques, dialogue and so on.

I'd like to ask you something, GoranAger. I've seen Airplane recently and I liked it very much. In fact, I liked it soo much that I wanted to have it on DVD, but then I also saw Airplane 2 on DVD. I also wanted to buy it but I couldn't remember whether it was worth buying. Is Airplane 2 any good like the first one or is it just another pretty good movie due to the many flash-backs which were originally presented in the first movie? Thanks for replying ...

Airplane 2 is just like Airplane 1, but in space.
The critics always give it a much worse rating than the first, because they find it unoriginal in comparison, but personally I've always found both equally hilarious.

It is actually the same movie, but I haven't seen Airplane for a while so I can't really compare. Airplane 2 has William Shatner in it :D
