Hi!
I'm rather new to Tomb Raider Underworld, but I think I have found a solution for the performance bug with TRU V.1.0 on Nvidia graphics cards. It has been tested only for a couple of hours of gameplay and only on my computer, but it seems to work fine, at least on the first couple of levels I've completed so far.
My computer is:
P4 D 820 2.8 GHz dual core, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 150 GB SATA2 HDD, Nvidia 9800GT 1 GB DDR3 VRAM
I am running TRU in 1024x768 at 100 Hz vertical refresh on a Samsung SyncMaster 795DF CRT flatscreen monitor. Performance is set to default, with VSync on.
Here's what I did:
I downloaded and enabled a program called 'reforce' written by Gregory Maynard-Hoare (it is a refresh rate forcing program for games that work on low refresh rates). I started the program, clicked on 'Auto Populate' to have it detect my available resolutions and their refresh rates, then saved the settings and closed the program. I'm no expert on such matters, but it seems to me that this is a registry-based refresh override program, since it needs not remain active in order to keep working.
Anyway, then I started TRU, notably WITHOUT VSYNC ON, and the game would work fine for some 5 or so minutes, and then framerate would drop to some 4-5 fps.
Then I returned to the TRU setup configuration screen and ENABLED VSYNC, and the game has been working flawlessly ever since then, at least for the graphics part. I've had a few crashes when saving, which could be attributed to game bugs and possibly my low-quality freeware resident antivirus guard.
If you decide to try this workaround, please bear in mind that it has been tested on mine and solely mine computer, so I really don't know what effects it might produce on yours as well as any other system, and I ACCEPT NO LIABILITY FOR ANY KIND OF DAMAGE. Also, keep in mind that this was not me searching for a solution, I simply stumbled accross this solution by sheer accident, when I got problems with TRU when reforce reset itself after driver update.
If this works for you, and I sincerely hope it does, please bear in mind that you will need to 'Auto-Populate' the resolutions and refresh rates in reforce whenever you update your drivers.
Thanks for your time and good luck!
My sincere apologies if someone has found this solution before I did; I'm new to the forum and haven't done much of a search for similar topics.
