help with characters inventory

Im trying to do the Training mission 2 Ive eliminated all the guards, I now need Tread to throw a molotov cocktail towards the lieutenant & stationary soldier, however I cant get him to throw it as he keeps going to use the shovel when I press the A button to throw it. how do I get him to equip the grenade in order to throw it. thanks

Im finding the instructions hard to follow, the Molotov cocktail is in Treads back pack but doesnt appear in the list on the bottom right of the screen I left click it in the backpack but it doesnt seem to do anything, this is getting me really frustrated, Ill give that a go.

Ive looked at that & it has helped in what each character can do I passed the cocktail to the correct person & pressed the hot key & hey presto! Thanks
