View Full Version : Any word on DRM, Copy Protection, Online Activation?

Hi all

Just found the trailer for this game online, and it looks like a must buy.

That is - unless there's some sort of omni-present DRM required to run it.

Will this be a Steam Title only - requiring Steam?

Will it need (possible limited) product activation?

Anything else?

I still don't trust any CP/DRM system that does not run entirely locally on my system. I hope this will be the case for this game.

At first i didnt understand you lol..

but thats when, if you buy a game, you can only instal it X amount of times, and when said X is used up, you cannot install the game anymore without calling some number to get it unlocked again?

I've had that with one game before...

but who knows, maybe MCM could be the only one to answer this.

Most games will need an activation number.

As for it being a steam exclusive, I have no idea.. Hopefully mcm answers this.

... Anyone who asks for this sort of information is usually planning on downloading or "pirating" a game.

Ignore.. & let him find out for himself by ultimately, Buying the game. :)

I would like to know too but I won't pirate the game... I pre-ordered the SE :D

I don't like these copy protections but I feel a bit helpless about it, there is nothing (legal) you can do... at least I dont like the Internet Activation. Cause if I have no other choice to get my PC infected by DRM I have to be connected to the internet...

Do I have to be always online whaile playing or just once after installing the game?

Yah, I guess nobody knows yet at this point. Hopefully it is nothing intrusive and nothing too stupid (online all the time to play, or install limitation). I was asking this question in the demo topic and someone said that it might be cd key validation for now, but he isnt sure either.

I already preordered the game too, if there is a SE in US, I would gladly pay for it, but then they have no such thing here. Pirating and cracking the game is inevitable anyway, so no use discussing about that. All I need to know is that this will be a good game and I want to contribute by buying the game.

If the DRM proves to be too much inconvenience, I probably just MIGHT be using cracks...Just MAYBE...

ummmm why? If he was pirating, he wouldn't need to know this info because pirates get past anything. Just ask EA and Spore.

He may want to know this for several reasons.
DRM will restrict you from installing your game more than a certain number of times. If your computer messes up, then that's one install gone. Then you will need to install it again. And then if your computer messes up again, then that's another install gone. Continue this, and you won't be able to install the game ever again.
Copy protection. If it's something like Starforce (which is known to damage disc drives), then there's a problem.
Online activation. If you can't get access to the internet at the time of installation, then you're screwed.

On one hand I understand the copy protection, if I create a Game I would try to protect it from piracy bur on the other hand

Steam is so terrible. Sure its good to keep track of games etc.. But if you bought 100 steam games then got hacked which often happens then you have to re-buy them all. Steam support is the most useless thing ever. They take 10 years to reply and most seem automatic anyway just saying something like. "We are sorry but we cannot recover your password. Try Password recover" Even though everyone does first.
I hope for the sake of all PC players that it does not go through steam in any way.

I have to disagree on that one. Steam accounts generally only get hacked because people are careless and use easy passwords. I've had problems in the past and they were more than happy to help. Sure I got an "automatic" response at first, but then after that someone is on the case.

Steam is definitely the future in digital content distribution, and is much better than any other out there. It's much better than DRM too as you can install it as many times as you like, on as many machines as you like, all you need to do is login to your account.

Oh well I have only had bad experiences with steam. Sure its good when it works..
And by the way, I had a 31 character password. Luckily I got to change it before he did.
I have gone to Support for various reasons and they never helped me not even once.

LOL.

I have news for you: Not every paying customer is so madly, blindingly in love with newly released games that he has to have them at all costs. Imagine that, Fanboi!

In my case, I currently have 12 legally bought games installed on my system (oh, I actually paid for my Win7 Ultimate License too, btw, a fair 200EUR worth of Operating System). I have about 30 more in their original DVD cases around, and certainly about 50 or 100 old games from way back in the Intel 286 times stored somewhere. And I never played a pirated copy in almost 20 years of personal computing When did you start buying games with your own money? How old are you, anyway? (Edit: Your profile lists you as 20 years of age, which means you were about two years old when I installed my first legal copy of a game on a Intel 286 Personal Computer.)

But know what? None of my currently installed games requires an online activation. And thanks to some people who play illegal copies of these games, I also have a No-CD hack for all of my 12 legit installs, I don't even have a moral problem using those since I paid regular asking price for these items. It keeps the disks safe and me from becoming a disk jockey.

I don't condone piracy - but I also don't condone efforts by Publishers to "tie" their customers into an every tightening web of dependence. And I want my games to last, if needed longer than the activation server.

Anyone with half a brain these days SHOULD concern himself with DRM and it's implications. As for example Ubisoft is right now trying to make an internet connection mandatory even for single player we are quickly on the way to becoming tennants, renting games instead of owning them.

And I had my fair share of planned Red Orchestra multiplayer evenings ruined by STEAM - "Game currently unvailable, please try again later."

But I suppose such far-reaching concerns about the future of computer gaming and consumer rights are a bit above your level. So thanks for the cheap "Haha, Pirate" shot - and thanks to the other board members for trying to help, even though it seems no one knows yet.

sorry to say this but umm ps3 ftw :D i been with playstation from ps1 and have had no hacks or big problems i don't really understand pc gaming. every time i play a game on the pc my hands cramp up  (never had a cramp playing playstation) imo... console games will always be much better than pc games.... but this is just my opinion :)

Console Gaming is a very small subset of the Games available out there. You don't get realistic flight sims, tanks sims or such. You don't get a lot of shooters like STALKER.

Console games are usually by definition fast, twitchy and short in content. While this is good every now and then (I'm currently hooked on Flatout UC arcade racer) it's not all I want from gaming.

And as for C-Games being better than PC-Games - tell me when they can run 1920x1200 with 4x FSAA and 16x Aniso at highest texture quality ;)

Go ahead , tell 'em
Personally, I love playing on consoles better than on a pc
and thats for e few reasons ; like:

- You can sit much more comfortable instead of on a chair
- You can play while your drunk ( wouldn't know how to find those buttons on the keyboard )
- You don't need to pay to upgrade your computer wich is the biggest sellpoint imo
so you can brag about your graphics and stuff like that but i can brag about the money i save ;)

Uuhm, a ps3 does need to instal the game but that's alright
That helps cut down the loading time when you're playing it.
In that time you can unzip your pants , get lost of all the unwanted liqued and
scramble some food so you can start gaming

In that case, i wouldn't do it if it takes space, considering xbox hasn't that much op space
compared to ps3 , sorry :rasp:

But we don't have a choice with the ps3 , good thing you can delete the installation when
you quite playing the game.

The whole steam exclusivety kinda sucks, cuz steam doesn't seem to work with windows 7 64bit. Oh well at least I have a ps3.

But I can understand the whole drm worries, although I do trust them, it's not like they hack your system, but they can be inconvenient like with gta iv, it wants the Internet just to create a savegame. So I just used a crack.

But the whole 64bit edition problem with both steam and games is frustrating, I mean I have 6gb of ram, so 64bit is my only option, I wish the developers would get that crap fixed.

Here's a really nice summary of the pitfalls with activated games:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/7134-Experienced-Points-Activation-Bomb

Summary: If you buy an activated game, it may last a lot shorter than you want it to last.

I have windows 7 64 bit and all my games on steam work just fine. Might be a problem with your computer.
