Developer profile: Daniel Willför
2 February 2010 - 04.01am
In the first of a series of short interviews with the team behind the game, we go head-to-head with Daniel Willför, Producer on Just Cause 2.
What is your name and job title?
Daniel Willför, Senior Producer
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, games you've worked on in the past and how you came to work for Avalanche?
I am 34 years old and have been working professionally with game development since the late 90s. The titles in my CV are "Headhunter" (Sega, 2001), "Knights of the Temple" (TDK, 2004), "Just Cause 1" (Eidos, 2006) and "Just Cause 2", (Square Enix, 2010).
Actually I did games before that as well. One highlight is when me and my brother won the third prize in a competition arranged by a Nordic Amiga computer magazine; I think it was back in 1992. The game was called "Battle Tic-Tac-Toe" and is best described as a mixture between Tic-Tac-Toe and Air Hockey. It was very addictive and fun and we should definitely do a remake some day!
What is your role on Just Cause 2 and what does this involve?
I am the Producer of the game and I have the main responsibility for the production of the title. It includes project management tasks such as planning, budgeting, staffing, negotiation, etc. But a big part is also to support the team so that they can do their work. The role is demanding, but at the same time very satisfying. When everything works and the team delivers great stuff, it is magic.
Can you tell us one of the coolest things about your job?
I love working in a creative environment where every one of my colleagues is passionate about what they are doing and all the time do their best to create great games. Not because they have to, but because they want to!
What is one of the things you have added to the game which you are most proud of?
As a producer I don't add stuff directly to the game. However, I am very proud of the different climate zones. It is something I have never seen in an open world game before and it adds further variation and beauty to the world of Panau.
Tell us something really cool about Just Cause 2?
If you use the grappling hook to throw a guy over the edge of a very tall building, you can hear him scream all the way until he hits the ground. It is very sadistic... and rewarding!
What do you love them most about working on Just Cause 2?
It has been a great opportunity to improve the things that were great in Just Cause 1 and at the same time addressing the weaker parts.
Can you finish with a Just Cause 2 fact for us?
One of the vehicles in the game is named after me. See if you can find it!
note the bold part i did. i did it cuz i liked it. i am going to look for a car that's named Willför, or Daniel. cool. i like :)
